Last week, nearly 30 Anglican student ministers from eight dioceses across the United States gathered at our church to learn together, worship deeply, and prayerfully cast a compelling vision for student discipleship. Student ministers had the opportunity to learn from the Rev. Dr. Erin Moniz and Bishop Brian Wallace. Together, they prayed for the youth of our churches, that they would encounter Jesus and be further formed into his image. We invite you to join your prayers with ours - lifting up our youth and parishes.

Dear Christ Church, Every so often, tragedy strikes to such a degree that we realize we have no ready or adequate response. As I am writing this, the death toll from this past weekend’s flooding surpassed 100 people, including many children, 27 of whom were either counselors or campers at Camp Mystic. Like many of you, our staff and clergy have been heartbroken and overwhelmed by this tragedy, and have fallen to our knees, crying out to Immanuel – “God with us” – in our suffering and grief...

On Pentecost we witnessed three ways the Spirit moved upon us. 26 people were confirmed or received by our bishops. As the bishops laid their hands over them and prayed for them, they prayed listening to the Spirit for each particular person. The presence of God’s gentle and soft voice, speaking against the harsher voices of this world, became evident for all. A gentle presecence of the Lord settled upon the entire sanctuary.

In the second service we saw Michael ordained to the diaconate and Nancy to the priesthood. As these two fell prostrate before the Lord, we witnessed the empowering presence of the Spirit, the Spirit alive as fiery life forming and solidifying these two to join the apostolic mission of the church proclaiming to all creation that Jesus is Lord and the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

We celebrated the newly ordained (including Beau who recently was ordained to the diaconate) with a family style Party at the Park. The joy of the Spirit was present everywhere you looked as we laughed and ate, catching up on events in each others’ lives. There was a vitality, an energy, a festivity we slipped into — even a snowball fight in June! All this is from the Spirit, who connects the body of Christ to one another in joy and friendship!

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth and remember the Emancipation Proclamation reaching Galveston, TX with the news that slavery in the United States was over. This mural (scroll to see it entirely) stands a few blocks from downtown Galveston, Texas. While we observe the sorrow of today, the national sin of slavery and its lingering consequences, we also observe the hope of this holiday, particularly the witness of hope the Black Church has given to all American churches.

Here are some ways we, Christ Church, might continue to learn and grow from the Black Church and her ministry and witness:

🔸Read C4SO Pastor and theologian Esau McCaulley’s Reading While Black
🔸Connect to C4SO’s Revelation 7:9 Taskforce
🔸Explore the ministry of Arrabon, a ministry committed to spiritual formation and racial reconciliation

May we continue to live into the fullness of God’s kingdom, always journeying towards our new home.

There is a lot of change taking place in the Christ Church backyard. Phase 1 of 3 is underway. This will be the transformative phase - when we reconfigure the space, build its bones, and plant the first round of (a lot) plants and trees!

Happy feast of the Ascension!

Almighty God, whose only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven: May our hearts and minds also there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
