A great article in today's Statesman. Besides Luis Fernando's personal journey, it captured one of the most poignant parts of the graduation ceremony:

>>The rest of the ceremony reflected the identity of a campus shaped by immigrant families. The valedictorian and salutatorian both switched to Spanish as they addressed the crowd. They referenced their parents’ immigration stories and the many Latin American countries where students or their parents were born. About a quarter of the class’ 191 graduates stood to show they were the first in their families to graduate from high school.

“We live in a time in which fear is used to divide our community, when the threat of separation controls many families,” valedictorian Fabian Velez-Navarrete said in Spanish. “Fear does not control us unless we allow it to. We should keep having the audacity to risk being free so that we can create a future that others say is not for us.”
