What's the meaning behind this year's visuals? Cristóbal Almanza, artist and graphic designer, walks us through the inspiration that started from our chosen theme: “O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.” Psalm 98:1 🙌🎨

"The 68th Annual Austin Diocesan Youth Conference (DCYC) chose the theme of 'Marvelous Things,' and it was my 10th opportunity to deliver the logo and promotional material designs for the event. Each year, I aim to create a unique look and feel that stands distinct from previous years. The four-year cycle of teen participants through high school provides a target for the unique elements and colors to use, making it easy to remember each event they experienced.
"The logomark is based on an etching-style flame with five tiny sparks in the form of crosses. While I have used flames in a few of the marks because it is a common symbol of the Holy Spirit, I wanted to focus on the idea of how we are claimed by Christ through His presence in us after baptism. This is most clear in the black version of the logo, where it looks like the mark burned from a firebrand.
"This mark of Christ on our being is indelible—it can’t be removed and it can’t be earned. It is a mark of love from our Creator. When the world tries to convince us we aren’t good enough or are lacking, He reminds us of our inherent dignity.
"The sparks in the form of imperfect crosses represent our humble attempts to embody Christ in the world and spread the Gospel. There are five because the number typically represents God’s favor and unearned grace towards us. This, combined with the imperfect shapes and the hand-brushed letters of “marvelous,” represents how God looks down at us as His marvelous creation, even when we are unworthy.
"The colors are vivid and fiery to show the living movement of God today. In a world where there is so much darkness, I pray that this symbolism and experience may inspire the young Church of Austin to be a light in the world."
