“I trust in the Lord for protection. So why do you say to me, ‘Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety!’” (Psalm 11:1)

After stopping by a string of Scottish castles this week, I can tell you one thing: these places are sturdy. Thick stone walls. Narrow entrances. Towers perched high above the landscape. The people inside could be harmed or driven out only by the determined and sustained effort of those on the outside.

And as I move from one fortress to another, I find myself noodling on a question:

What is the modern equivalent of the highland castle?

Where do people like me run when life starts coming apart at the seams? What do we trust to hold when trouble pounds on the door?

A variety of answers come to mind — not all of them good.

Some retreat into distraction. Others into anger. Some hide behind money, busyness, control, or the illusion that they can outmaneuver pain.

But I know my own answer:

“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble… The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.” (Psalm 46:1,7)

Not an escape hatch. Not denial.

A refuge.

So if you are enduring a hard season and need to hole up for a while, keep this in mind. Better yet, try it on for size.

Tell God what’s going on.

And then be still long enough to remember you are not facing it alone.

This past Sunday Kyle Frazier shared the final message from the ‘Dangerous Wonder’ series. To check out his entire message click on the link in the bio and use these next steps to dig even deeper:

➡️ Reading: John 8:2-11
➡️ Reflection: What do you think Jesus was writing in the sand?
➡️ Discussion: What does the grace that Jesus showed the woman in the story mean to you in your life?

This week’s photo may look a little different than normal. Yes, I’m still in the picture. It’s just that I’m not front and center.

If you’re having trouble spotting the 1987 version of me, look to the back row on the left side. Maroon polo. Mustache. Short shorts. A mostly full head of hair.

Yep. That’s me — grinning uncontrollably after riding the all-wooden Colossus roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain with a group of high school students from my church in Phoenix.

That season of life came with plenty of ups and downs — the highest highs and the lowest lows. Looking back now, I’m grateful for every twist and turn in the adventure of following Jesus. At the time, I probably would have preferred something a little more stable and predictable. But those years of early adulthood shaped me into the person I am today.

Maybe that’s why these words from Mike Yaconelli resonate so deeply with me:
“My life has been up and down, careening left then right, full of mistakes and bad decisions, and if I died right now, even though I would love to live longer, I could say from the depths of my soul, ‘What a ride!’”

He also wrote:
“Passion is the roller coaster ride that can happen when you follow Jesus Christ. It is the breathtaking, thrill-filled, bone-rattling ride of a lifetime where every moment matters and all you can do is hang on for dear life. When you become a Christian… you decide in favor of passion. Jesus came to forgive us of our sin, yes, but His mission was also to introduce us to the passion of living. Most people believe that following Jesus is all about living right. Not true. Following Jesus is all about living fully.” (Dangerous Wonder)

So what’s keeping you from experiencing the thrill of following Jesus? Is there something you’re unwilling to release in order to step into the ride of your life?

The adventure begins the moment you say yes.
