I typically enter our facility through the upper-level doors marked with ACTS Church Lakeway's name and logo. This past Wednesday, however, you would have found me coming and going through the lower-level entrance, clearly labeled with the name of our ministry partner: Lake Travis Crisis Ministries.

No, I wasn't lost, dazed, or confused.

I was volunteering with LTCM's new Summer Lunch Program. Through this effort, they are providing meals for families who rely on school-based meal assistance during the academic year. Just one month into the program, they are already serving 213 children. This past week, that included distributing a couple hundred yellow bananas.

Some people might argue that pastors should stick to preaching. But I happen to follow a Savior who not only taught about the Kingdom of Heaven, but also cared deeply for people's physical needs. Again and again, Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, and showed compassion to those who were struggling.

Which is why spending an afternoon hauling bananas felt a lot less like a distraction from ministry and a lot more like following in His footsteps.

"Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, 'Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well'—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless." — James 2:15-17

On a recent flight to attend a friend’s wedding in Central America, I was struck by the image displayed on the seat-back screen in front of me. The route from Texas to Honduras was clearly traced across the map, but hovering over it was a dim reflection of my own face in the glass.

In a single glance, I could see where I had come from, where I was going, and who I was.

If you’re anything like me, much of life is spent focused on the journey: where you are now, where you’re headed next, and what needs to be done to get there.

But every so often, God provides a moment of reflection that shifts our attention from the route to the traveler.

Who has God made you to be? Why has He placed you here? When your journey is complete, what will you be remembered for?

That faint image superimposed on a map of the world reminded me that our lives are not measured merely by the miles we travel or the plans we make. One day, every destination on our calendar will be behind us.

So what will we do with the days that have been given to us?

The apostle James puts it this way:

“Listen, those of you who are boasting, ‘Today or tomorrow we’ll go to another city and spend some time and go into business and make heaps of profit!’ But you don’t have a clue what tomorrow may bring. For your fleeting life is but a warm breath of air that is visible in the cold only for a moment and then vanishes! Instead you should say, ‘Our tomorrows are in the Lord’s hands and if he is willing we will live life to its fullest and do this or that.’” (James 4:13–15)

“So if you know of an opportunity to do the right thing today, yet you refrain from doing it, you’re guilty of sin.” (James 4:17)
