From bare ground to beautiful green grass! 🌱

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our very first “Sod Party”! With many hands and plenty of hard work, we transformed the space where the Missions Building once stood into a beautiful new green space for our church and community.

We’re so grateful for everyone who showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and helped make it happen. The more the merrier really was true! 🌿🙌

Goodbye “temporary” Missions Building and thank you for all you did to help OHUMC bring God’s love to the community. Originally, four not-so-beautiful former construction office trailers were placed in the back section of the church property to serve as a “temporary” space for children’s Sunday School. Later these trailers provided a gathering space for a group of cognitively-challenged adults who later became the Oak Hill leaders of a program called Operation Christmas Child. In time, this “temporary" building transformed into a safe short-term shelter for unhoused families. It then became the Jamey Project, where each Monday, the building welcomed anyone in need of a place to shower, recharge their phone or computer, take a break from the weather, and engage in conversations with the hosts over a snack meal and water. Additionally, it served as a freeze shelter for individuals residing in camps in Southwest Austin. The Other Ones Foundation, a new non-profit dedicated to serving the unsheltered in our city, found its initial home in this “temporary” building before expanding into what is now known as Esperanza. The building also hosted Monday Dinners for our unhoused friends living in the wooded area of our church property. Furthermore, the “temporary building” provided space for donated furnishings and household goods, enabling countless individuals and families to embark on a fresh start with essential provisions that transformed shelter into a home.
