Thank you, Lama Ole Nydahl!

Lama Ole passed away

Dearest friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I am reaching out to you today. This morning, our beloved teacher, Lama Ole, left his Viking body, which he tirelessly devoted to benefiting others. His passing unfolded in a completely natural and peaceful way — marked, as always, by immense love and strength.

Wherever we are, we are united in gratitude for everything Lama Ole taught us and for all he accomplished for Buddhism in the West and within our Karma Kagyu lineage.

May we cherish his extraordinary example and continue to carry it forward in everything we do.

With love,
Anne Nydahl

P.S. You are all very welcome to come to the Europe Center. After some quiet days of meditation, there will be an opportunity to pay your last respects.

With deep sadness, we share the news that Lama Ole Nydahl has passed beyond this life.

We feel immense gratitude for his extraordinary life and tireless activity in bringing Buddha Dharma and the Karma Kagyu teachings to the West and around the world. Through his courage, energy, and unwavering devotion, countless people found meaning, friendship, and a path of practice.

As H.H. the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje reminds us, the greatest way to honor our teacher is to continue the practice and keep the teachings alive in our hearts and daily lives.

We are deeply fortunate to have met such an extraordinary teacher in this lifetime.

With gratitude!
Austin Sangha

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message on the occasion of the 85th birthday of Lama Ole Nydahl.
Dear Dharma friends,
Today marks the 85th birthday of our dear Lama Ole.
For more than fifty years, Lama Ole has dedicated his life to practicing and sharing the Buddha Dharma. Over the course of these many years, he has inspired countless individuals through his example and offered them access to the Dharma, the Buddha’s teaching.
This precious activity has accumulated immense joy and merit, and I deeply rejoice in the vast benefit for both our Karma Kagyu lineage and innumerable sentient beings.
On the auspicious occasion of his 85th birthday, I offer my prayers to the Karma Kagyu lineage masters, as well as to the longevity aspect of White Tara, to bless and protect Lama Ole, and I invite all of my students to join me in these prayers.

Join us for the lecture and meditation with traveling teacher Carola Lofton. Carola will give an introduction to Diamond Way Buddhist teachings and meditation.
“Meditation is mind’s gift to itself.” - Lama Ole Nydahl
To start a meditation, we first calm and focus the mind. To do this, we usually concentrate on the breath or on an object. We then use this focused attention to develop insight. The ultimate aim of Buddhist meditation is insight into the nature of mind – enlightenment.
In 2002, at Lama Ole’s request, she began giving formal Dharma teachings and has since travelled through the Americas and Europe sharing his experience. Carola travelled with Lama Ole for seven years around the world. She lives in Austin and teaches German.
