In honor of , the American Ethical Union put together a video of folks across the Ethical Culture Movement reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on the 74th anniversary of its publication. Those who participated in this video read the UDHR in their primary language or in a language that they are fluent in. Ultimately, the goal is to showcase the diversity of the Ethical Culture movement; that individuals of all ages, races, genders, and more are welcome to be a part of our community. Special thanks to all the volunteers; we couldn’t have done this without you. So, sit back and relax, and enjoy the video in the link below.

Felix Adler, founder of Ethical Culture, so admired Ralph Waldo Emerson that he named his son "Waldo." We celebrate Emerson's birthday on May 25 as someone who inspired the development of Ethical Culture. The quote from Emerson is very close to Adler's Ethical Rule: "Act so as to bring out the best in others and thereby in thyself." In the Ethical Society of Austin, we are learning that, either way, we become Ethical by acting Ethical.

Felix Adler, age 24, delivered the address which marked the founding of Ethical Culture (and the New York Society for Ethical Culture) on May 15, 1876. He noted that what we do matters more than what we believe, arguing that we should set aside our disagreements in philosophy to work together for the common good. He respected "every honest conviction" and welcomed all to the fellowship of Ethical Culture.

The Ethical Society of Austin welcomes everyone, regardless of belief, to meet with us as we explore the ways in which we can live ethical lives and build an ethical community.

We take it for granted that women may now enter into contracts, manage their money and their property, choose to have a career outside the home. That has only slowly come to be in these United States. Today there are still restrictions on the very private decisions that women might wish to make about when and whether to give birth. Today women are still paid less than men for the same work. Today women still have to push to be heard in public discourse.

The Ethical Society of Austin values the contributions that women have made to the growth and development of Ethical Culture over the past 146 years. As a Movement, we have depended on women for both the ideas and the ethical actions that have marked our history with achievements both great and small. We look forward to a future of equity and true partnership among all our members.

Identity is both personal and public. Our identity is who we are, and it is an essential part of the toolbox that we use to get us through the days of our lives. When we are forced by others to present ourselves with a false or undesired identity, we are shackled by other people’s ideas about who we should be. Some of these ideas come from our cultural past and will be very slow to change. Others come from social prejudices that are toxic in their intention and in their performance.

The Ethical Society of Austin respects the identity that each of us has formed, whether it is gender identity, ethnic identity, or an indicator of one’s marital status. Each of us is unique with our own personal worth and should be able to determine how we should be identified by name, title, pronouns, or other social identifiers.
