Yes, Pastor Taylor, we share your joy that today we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ordination women in the ! Today, we celebrate the ministries of Pastor Taylor and Pastor Cathy—a dynamic clergywoman duo if we’ve ever seen one. On this anniversary, we also honor the clergywomen who have served before them and who helped to pave the way for their leadership. We are grateful for the clergywomen in extension ministry or who are retired who call First Church Austin their spiritual home. We celebrate the clergywomen who have experienced a call to ordained ministry or been trained for pastoral leadership while a part of this faith community. We remember with sorrow the women who experienced the denial of their calling while the church and culture struggled to accept the spiritual leadership of women. And it, as we acknowledge the foundation from which our future will emerge, we pray for the little children who will one day become the clergywomen who lead us.

You are fearfully and WONDERFULLY MADE - so proud of our church providing this amazing ministry for our 10-12 year olds and their families. It provides tools and resources for them to understand reproduction and how God created us. Huge thanks to the helpers without whom this would not be possible: Amanda Cripe, Davis Covin, Thomas Mills, Daniela Rodriguez, Tom Strantwitz III, Devon Whipple, Devon Bailey, Brad Buchanan and J’Nevelyn Fleming.

Today, United Methodists gathered in the nation’s capital and across the country for Faithful Resistance: A Public Witness for Immigrant Justice. was honored to help host a time of prayer before participants from a number of area United Methodist churches made their way to the Capitol steps for a litany, more prayer, and songs of lament, hope, and protest. Thank you to our song leader, AV, from University UMC, to all who spoke and prayed with us and to everyone who gathered today to share a commitment to God’s kin-dom, where no one falls beyond the boundaries of God’s love.

Tomorrow, February 25, United Methodist agencies are teaming up to organize an act of faithful resistance and public witness for immigrant justice. The General Boards of Church and Society, Religion and Race, and United Methodist Committee on Relief are participating in an ecumenical and interfaith worship service and witness calling for the humane treatment of immigrants in Washington, D.C.

Many of us cannot travel there, but we can share in this act of faith locally, so FUMC Austin is hosting a satellite event and invites all to participate in an Austin-area witness. The day will begin with worship, followed by a peaceful procession to the State Capitol for prayer. This is an opportunity to show solidarity for immigrants and call upon Christians everywhere to live out Christ’s call on all of us to “welcome the stranger.”

Schedule:
9:00-10:00AM
Watch the opening worship service together via livestream in the Sanctuary

10:00AM
Peaceful procession to the Texas Capitol for prayer.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made our first community meal—a part of our Third Sundays Together—a flipping good time. On Sunday, we served more than 150 pancakes and raced with a few more! Chefs extraordinaire Mack and Julie made the day delicious. The Pride, our LGBTQ+ community group helped to host, thanks to members Karen, Rose, and Matt. Volunteers Jan, Brad, Ava, Curtis, and Isaac also helped to set up, cook, serve, and clean up. Special thanks also goes to our Senior Director of Operations, Emily Buchanan, who organized and managed all the details for this fun intergenerational event. Mark your calendar for our next Third Sunday Together Community Meal on March 15!

As we begin our Lenten journey, we pray:

The good in us, o Lord, comes from you.
Out of the ashes of our lives and our world,
You are able to form something holy and new.
We give ourselves to you for this Lenten journey.
Give us grace for the commitments we make.
Bear fruit within us, that we may be holy,
and make our lives the seeds of justice in this world.
Amen.

Today, we remember that we are human—frail, prone to mistakes and broken relationships, mortal. Today, we remember that God loves us and meets us in the dust and ash of our lives. As the season of Lent begins with this Ash Wednesday, we pray that the journey of the next forty days leads you closer to the God who made you, who loves you, and who never gives up on you. Join us tonight at 7:30PM in the FUMC Sanctuary for another opportunity to worship on Ash Wednesday.
