Pastoral Intern Emily Fenwick shared Sunday's message, reminding us that liminal space--those places and times when things are in between or shifting--is a key feature of our Christian faith. As we await the coming of the Kin-dom of God, our call is to love neighbor as self; indeed, love is "the calling, the path, and the destination."

"My bachelorโ€™s degree is in Human Ecology, and one thing that has stuck with me from my training as a โ€œHuman Ecologistโ€ is a deep appreciation for soil. In my โ€œGardens and Greenhousesโ€ class, we were forbidden from using the word โ€œdirtโ€ to describe the dynamic and vital ecosystem made up of organic matter, insects, bacteria, fungi, and billions of microorganisms which all work together to support life on this planet. We learned that if you want to feed your plants, you must feed the soil. Healthy, living soil is essential for plant life โ€” and, by extension, animal and human life, too. In turn, soil depends on humans, animals, and plants for food as we decompose! A wonderfully ingenious cycle, no?"

In the final installment of our Come to the Lakeshore worship series, Pastor Hilary shares a message on abundance. In the story of the miraculous catch found in the Gospel of John, the nets of the disciples were so full that they were in danger of breaking. And yet, they did not break. Hilary reminds us that, like those full nets, no matter what we are struggling with, God helps us keep it together.

"In the early church, baptism was a significant milestone. By the fourth century, adult converts often spent months or even years learning the Christian faith and preparing for baptism. Often, baptisms would take place on Easter or at the Easter Vigil the night before. Those who had been preparing would enter the waters for baptism (often without their clothing!), then were anointed with oil before joining the rest of their community in worship. Baptism marked their entrance into the church."

Pastor Hilary shared a powerful message tying together many of the themes found in the story of calling the disciples, or the "miraculous catch," found in Luke 5. As we continue our August series, Come to the Lakeshore, Hilary reminds us that, in his ministry, Jesus went to the places where ordinary people didn't have enough to survive. In the story, the urgency for survival is paired with the willingness to put the nets out just one more time, resulting in an abundance so great that the nets begin to break.
