Mary Helen lost everything that was most special to her when she went to prison. She still faces hardship but she is full of joy in the Lord and feels He has given her more blessings than she could have imagined out of this hardship. Now more than 9 months out of prison, Mary Helen sees how the Lord continues to bring her blessings and joy through her trust and faith in Him. Through Mary Helen’s testimony we can see the power of God’s promise and know He can heal the heart of a prison inmate full of shame.

The Lord said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ 2 Corinthians 12:9

Mary Helen initially felt abandoned by God when she landed in Lockhart prison.  She was consumed by shame and didn’t feel worthy of His love. But once she entered the God of Hope faith-based dorm, she met the volunteers, teachers and coaches who showed her God’s love and compassion. Her hope translated to a new trust in God through the daily discipleship program where she really began to understand the scripture and God’s promises lived out. She says God brought her back to a new life, restored in His truth. After 9 months out of prison, Mary Helen sees how the Lord continues to bring her blessings and joy through her trust and faith in Him. The Lord said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ 2 Corinthians 12:9

Mary Helen has been a believer in Christ most of her life and thought she was doing all the right things. She served at church and taught her children about Jesus. She thought she had earned her way, but through the shame of her mistake and her time in prison, God taught her that His grace is sufficient. She couldn’t earn it.

The Lord said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ 2 Corinthians 12:9
