A CALL TO PRAYER BY AMERICA’S LEADERS:

A NATION IN THE MAKING: At the formation of the United States, about five weeks into the Constitutional Convention of 1787 when the leaders were futilely attempting to draft the U. S. Constitution, founding father Benjamin Franklin challenged them with a call to prayer. “In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of Lights to illuminate our understanding? In the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor. . . . And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, sir, in the Sacred Writings, that “except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel. . . . A NATION IN THE BEGINNING: President George Washington explained why he called the nation's first federal day of prayer, "It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” ( proclamation for a National Thanksgiving on October 3, 1789)

A NATION IN CONFLICT: President Abraham Lincoln reminded the nation in the midst of the Civil War: “[I]t is the duty of nations as well . . . and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord [Psalm 33:12]. . . . But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace – too proud to pray to the God that made us.” (Proclamation Appointing a National Fast Day, March 30, 1863)

A NATION IN WORLD WAR 2: "Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization...Help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice." President Franklin D. Roosevelt (June 6, 1944, D-Day Prayer on Allied Invasion of Normandy, France)
If prayer to Almighty God for the nation was important then, it is certainly important now!

A NATION AT THE CROSSROADS: On September 26, 2016 in consideration of the U.S. general election Dr. Alveda King said, “We need to prepare to listen without having our feelings prevent us from hearing truth. This cannot be a personality contest or an emotional who owes us an apology exercise. We can't afford to be distracted by division. We, the Acts 17:26 ‘One Blood, One Human Race’ family must unite in prayer so that God will heal our nation.” Then she quoted her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, "We must learn to live together as brothers [and sisters] or perish as fools." She concluded by saying, “Pray for America.”

This past Sunday morning at First Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Charles Stanley said that America is at the crossroads. He stated that America’s future is at stake. And then he changed the worship service into a prayer service, and called the church to an extended time of prayer for America.

And we concur. Pray for America!

Encounter – Experience – Embrace – Enjoy God

So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief’. However, ‘while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it... Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
(Hebrews 3:19; 4:1, ESV).

My friend, what keeps us, as followers of Jesus, from entering God’s rest and freedom? Hebrews lets us know the culprit is unbelief. And unbelief leads us into disobedience (i.e., rebellion). However, true believers are empowered to encounter, experience, embrace, and enjoy Jesus’ Life living within, so that we might enter into the freedom of God’s rest.

I am not referring to 'getting saved'; rather, I am looking at the writer’s first century audience of believers struggling to stay connected to God through their relationship with Jesus Christ, instead of religion and law. Not only to encounter Jesus as sovereign Lord and forgiving Lamb; but to encounter Him as saving Life amidst their fears and struggles. To experience Him as their rescuing Liberator; so, they might embrace Him as their all-wise Leader and Light-bearer of grace and truth; and enjoy Him as the perfect Lover of their souls.

Sounds modern, doesn’t it? So many Christians today, struggle with right living. Our hearts are easily distracted and derailed from growing in the grace and truth of Jesus Christ. We tend to ignore our relationship with God, until the misery overpowers us in defeat. But why DEFEAT? Why be overcome by sin’s hunt, haunt, and habit? Our God has rescued us from sin’s penalty, power, perception, and practice.

As followers of Jesus we must learn to encounter, experience, embrace, and enjoy Him; so, we may enter into the rest and comfort of His Life and freedom.

1. We must have a genuine encounter with Jesus Christ, confessing from a believing heart that He is the risen Lord—our raised-from-the-dead and exalted-above-all Sovereign. When we make such a believing confession, we get saved that we might learn to live saved.

2. We must have a genuine encounter with Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. We must repent (i.e., turn away) from our sins, with a true and sincere repentance that leads us into Jesus’ Eternal Life by faith. So, we may learn to live forgiven instead of condemned, repentant instead of repressing the truth, and believing instead of doubtful.

3. We must have a genuine encounter with Jesus as our sovereign Lord and forgiving Lamb; so we might experience Him as Life—our saving Life—so that we are empowered to live from His Life living in and through us.

4. We must have a genuine encounter with God, through Jesus’ Life living within us, so we may experience Him as our Liberator, rescuing us from sin’s hunt, haunt, and habit. We grow in His grace and truth. We learn His forgiveness more deeply. We understand His Life more intensely. We learn to live from His Life within, to overcome. He becomes our one and only Source for right living, because He is!

5. As we encounter and experience God deeper, we are compelled to embrace Him with our whole being—spirit, soul, and body. He is our Life! He is our Source! Right living flows from Him! So, we follow him as our Redemption and all-wise Leader. His Life empowers us more intensely, as we embrace Him as our Light-bearer of grace and truth, and enjoy Him as the perfect Lover our souls. His Love flows into and through our lives passionately, as we grow to embrace the depths of our identity in Him. What a romance!

The journey into and from God’s Life brightens the darkest times with His Light. His amazing love raises us to live from His Life. Overcoming sin’s hunt, haunt, and habit is just the surface of His romance. The depths are enjoying the beauties of Christ living in and through us. His attributes embrace our lives with the rest and comfort of His mercy, the power and strength of His grace, and the wonder of His Love for us.

May your journey with Jesus encounter Him as Lord, Lamb, and Life. And may His Life envelope you in rescue from sin’s hunt, haunt, and habit; so, you experience Him as Liberator. May you embrace Him as all-wise Leader and Light-bearer of grace-and-truth. May you enjoy His romance as the perfect Lover of your soul.

Christian Prosperity Amidst Same S*x Marriage

My Friends,
‘I greet you with the grace and peace poured into our lives by God our Father and our Master, Jesus Christ’ (Ephesians 1:2).

‘How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son’ (Ephesians 1:3-6).

God bless… God gift… God prosper… What is this divine prosperity?

Friends, we who believe in and are followers of Jesus have His Life living within us (Colossians 1:27). His Life empowers us to experience Him. And we, who are righteous, PROSPER!

See what Jesus’ Life looks like, as He lives His Life in and through us. Look at how we think, choose, and feel with Jesus’ Life living within. ‘He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely’ (Galatians 5:22-23, the Message Bible). See the prosperity! See how Holy Spirit works the inner character of Jesus’ Life into and flowing from us.

But notice the battle that is always present in us as well. Our flesh is warring against our spirit (Galatians 5:17), always trying to derail us from receiving God’s gifts and prosperity. ‘It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap s*x; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on’ (Galatians 5:19-21). But do you see the difference between this disordered and damage life from Jesus’ Life?

We live in a culture that claims GOD IS DEAD! Or, if we believe God is alive and cares for us, He would never punish us for our struggles with right and wrong. We think and feel that we are okay with God, because we really are good people at heart. We maybe ethical, but morality is difficult. We may be religious but obedience is complicated. We may know the difference between right and wrong, but being human is to struggle. We join with our culture by exchanging truth for lies, morality for mere ethics, tolerance for approval, and right for wrong. We are fools!

My friends, blogs and forums are full of examples arguing the recent Supreme Court’s ruling on same s*x marriage. If I were asked for my opinion on the legalization of same s*x marriage, my response would be something along these lines.

We live in a democracy and ‘the people’ get to choose what is legal and what is not. And yes, there is even argument about whether ‘we the people’ actually made this choice. Regardless, whether the people’s choice or the court’s ruling, same s*x marriage has been passed into law. Yet, the law of the land doesn’t determine what is right. There is only one standard of right, and His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God. The consequences for disobeying God still remain (Romans 1:18-27). And we are, as individuals, responsible. Whatever your opinion is, legalizing what is wrong in hopes of making it right only makes the fool more foolish. How we think, choose, and feel isn’t the benchmark of right and wrong. Jesus is the only standard. He is the only Source for right living.

So how are we, as followers of Jesus, to react? I really appreciate the ministry, Desiring God, pointing us to this response, in the wake of legalized same s*x marriage —“you’re wrong and you’re loved’— that’s the unique voice of the Christian”. The Denison Forum joins Desiring God, speaking into our lives as Christians about same s*x issues—unwanted same s*x attractions, the rebellion of homos*xual behavior, and how the Gospel changes our identity from the sins we participate in, to the Life of Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:3-4). “Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in s*xual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homos*xuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:9-11, NLT).
