He didn't sleep for three weeks.

George Frideric Handel was 56 years old in the summer of 1741. He was in serious debt. His opera career had collapsed. His health had been poor. He had suffered what appears to have been a stroke several years earlier that temporarily paralysed his right arm. The musical world he had spent his life building was falling apart around him.

Then a librettist named Charles Jennens sent him a text.

It was a compilation of Scripture passages — from Isaiah, the Psalms, the Gospels and Revelation — arranged to tell the story of the Messiah. Jennens had been working on it for years. He believed it was extraordinary. He sent it to Handel hoping the composer would set it to music.
Handel sat down on August 22nd 1741.
He did not stop.
For 24 days he barely left his room. His servants brought food and found it untouched. They heard him working through the night. When they checked on him he was often in tears — not from distress but from something they struggled to describe.
He completed 260 pages of music in 24 days.
When he finished the Hallelujah chorus — the piece that ends Part II — his servant found him weeping at his desk. Asked what had happened Handel told him — I did think I did see all heaven before me and the great God himself.
The Messiah premiered in Dublin in April 1742. When the Hallelujah chorus was sung King George II — in attendance — stood to his feet. The audience followed. The tradition of standing for the Hallelujah chorus has continued for 280 years.
260 pages. 24 days. A composer in debt who said he was writing down what he saw.

I've felt many times in my life that God was giving me more than I could handle. The Apostle Paul faced many hard times, and so did the first-century church. This is why we must reject the prosperity gospel. We will face hard times in this life. The good news is that God will be with us through every trial. He will never leave us or forsake us, even until the end of the age.

So when you are in the midst of the storm, don’t look at the wind and the waves. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and He will be faithful to see you through whatever circumstances you find yourself in. When I go through hard times now, I say, “This happened so that I would not rely on myself but on a God who raises the dead!”. God has yet to fail me yet!
