_____
Reverend Gerald E. Tivy entered eternal life on June 13, 2026 โ€” The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Jerry Tivy was born in Chicago on June 5, 1938 to Thomas Biggy and Mary Meehan Biggy and was baptized at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Chicago. When Jerry was just three years old, his father died. Several years later, his mother married John Tivy, who adopted "the three Tivy boys"... Thomas, Gerald, and Richard. "Daddy Tivy" provided a loving and happy home for the family. Jerry graduated from the parish grade school and entered Quigley Seminary in Chicago. After graduation from Quigley, he continued his studies at Holy Cross Seminary in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, studying for the Diocese of Joliet. After graduation from Holy Cross Seminary, he completed his graduate studies in theology at Saint Procopius Seminary in Lisle.
Father Tivy was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Joliet on May 23, 1964 in the Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus, and, the next day, he celebrated his First Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving on Pentecost Sunday at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Chicago. Before ordination to the priesthood, he served as a deacon at Saint Joseph Church in Downers Grove. His first assignment as a priest was to Saint Joseph Church in Addison. In October of 1967 he was transferred to Saint Petronille Church in Glen Ellyn. In September of 1970 he returned to Saint Joseph Church in Downers Grove to serve as Parochial Vicar. In June 1971 he was assigned to Visitation Church in Elmhurst. In 1974 he was transferred to Saint Dominic Church in Bolingbrook. In March of 1976 Bishop Blanchette assigned him as Parochial Vicar at Saint Anne Church in Oswego, and to further studies in the Sacred Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he earned a Masters Degree in the Sacred Liturgy.
In 1976, after obtaining the Masters Degree, Bishop Romeo Blanchette appointed Father Tivy the Founding Director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Diocese of Joliet. In 1978 he left Oswego, opened the Office of Divine Worship full time, and took up residence at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Lockport, where he taught Liturgy, Church History, and served as a spiritual director and prefect for the high school seminarians. During his years of residence at the Seminary, Father also served as the Chaplain to the Joliet Franciscan Sisters at their Motherhouse in Joliet and also to the Christian Brothers serving at Lewis University.
While working to establish the Office of Divine Worship, with the assistance of Sister Joan Tabat, SSSF, and under the direction of Bishop Blanchette, Father Tivy was instrumental in training the priests and parishes throughout the Diocese in the celebration of the Mass and Sacraments beginning in the late 1960's, in accord with the liturgical reform and changes mandated by the Second Vatican Council. He also established and maintained liturgical ministry training for the laity of the Diocese and offered continual liturgical instruction of the clergy. He established the liturgical training programs used in the Permanent Diaconate Program, and was, under both Bishop Blanchette and Bishop Imesch, instrumental in establishing the pattern and style of our Cathedral/Pontifical Liturgies celebrated in the Cathedral and throughout the Diocese for various occasions. He coordinated all Diocesan liturgies and served as the Master of Ceremonies to our Bishops throughout his years in the Office of Divine Worship. In 1979 he founded the Joliet Diocesan Chorale, placing it under the direction of Sister Joan Tabat, and later, Nick Thomas. The choir provided music for Diocesan ceremonies for more than 30 years. For a few years after leaving the Office of Worship, while pastor of Saint Joan of Arc, Father Tivy was asked to teach the Liturgical Practicums to the Transitional Deacons at Mundelein Seminary. Throughout his tenure, as Father Tivy served our Bishops as the Master of Ceremonies, his expertise, gracious demeanor, and refined liturgical style was welcomed, appreciated, and respected by the Bishops he so lovingly and faithfully served.
In 1982 Father was appointed the pastor of Saint Joseph Church in Manhattan. In 1988, when he left the Office of Worship, Bishop Imesch appointed Father Tivy the Founding Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Aurora. The congregation rapidly grew from the original 54 founding families and Father Tivy built the rectory, offices, and the church. He served as pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish until June 2000 when Bishop Imesch appointed him Pastor of Saint Joan of Arc Church in Lisle. He retired as pastor in 2008. However, in 2010, Bishop Peter Sartain asked him to serve as Administrator of Saint Isaac Jogues Church in Hinsdale, during a time of transition for the parish. In September of 2010 the Bishop asked him to accept the Pastorate at Holy Trinity Church in Westmont, where he served until June 2011. He officially retired in June 2015, but continued to offer assistance to Saint Isaac Jogues Church, Hinsdale; Visitation Church, Elmhurst; Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Elmhurst, and wherever else he was asked to assist.
In April of 2021 his brother, Father Thomas Tivy of the Archdiocese of Chicago, died. In July of 2021 Father moved from the condo he shared with his brother to Saint John Vianney Villa in Naperville. In September of that year, he suffered a serious stroke and heart attack. After rehab, because he needed more specific care, he moved to Saint Joseph Home for the Elderly in Palatine, Illinois, sponsored by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Father Tivy lived under the Sistersโ€™ care for the next four years and was a beloved priest and resident in the home. He loved the Sisters and was most appreciative of the love and care they gave him as his health continued to decline and his dementia rapidly progressed. Father Tivy died peacefully on June 13th at 11:20pm as the Little Sisters of the Poor, gathered around his bed keeping 24-hour vigil, chanted the Salve Regina. The Sisters provided him with beautiful care to the end and were with him when he passed.
Father Tivy was preceded in death by his beloved uncle, Monsignor Thomas Meehan (Archdiocese of Chicago); his mother, Mary Meehan Tivy; his father, Thomas Biggy; his beloved step-father John Tivy; his brothers, Reverend Thomas Tivy of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Richard (Noelle and Annette Clauson) Tivy; and his nephews, Michael Tivy, Paul Clauson, and Glenn Clauson. He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Mary Tivy (Ed) Kolodziejski, Richard (Nancy) Tivy, John Tivy, Connie Clauson (Rich) Gjertsen, Chris Clauson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Lord says to Moses: โ€œYou have seen how I brought you here to myself.โ€ Today, โ€œat the sight of the crowds, Jesusโ€™ heart was moved with pity for them.โ€ The Lord was moved with pity because he wanted each person in that crowd to respond to his love. So Jesus summons the Twelve to be the laborers for the harvest. They are to proclaim: โ€œThe kingdom of heaven is at hand.โ€ Speaking on behalf of the Lord, their words mean, โ€œYou shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people.โ€ Or, as Saint Paul expresses it after the Resurrection, โ€œGod proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.โ€

Mary โ€œkeptโ€ the word of God in her heart, both by pondering and by obeying. She held the Word made flesh, her beloved Son, in her heart as she had carried him in her body during her pregnancy, and she allowed his word to transform her life.

The day after rejoicing in the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we honor the Immaculate Heart of the woman who gave Jesus his humanity. The mystery of the Heart of Jesus is projected onto and reverberates in the Heart of his Motherโ€ฆ. The memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a celebration of the relationship of Mary with her Sonโ€™s work of salvation.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY
To have even a slight understanding of Maryโ€™s prayer we must try to pe*****te the sanctuary of her intimate union with God. No one has ever lived in closer intimacy with Him. Let us reverently observe this intimacy from the viewpoint of the divine maternity.

Who can imagine the secret communications between Mary and the Incarnate Word while she carried Him in her virginal womb? Although there was nothing to distinguish her exteriorly from other women in the same condition, yet, in the secrecy of her heart she led a life of the closest possible union between God and a mere creature.

All Maryโ€™s glory and grandeur were interior. In this true sanctuary which concealed the Holy of Holies, Mary, living ciborium of the Incarnate Word, was aflame with love, absorbed in adoration. Carrying within her the burning furnace of charity, how could Mary not remain all inflamed by it! The more she was inflamed with love, the more she understood the mystery of love which was taking place within her.

No one ever pe*****ted the secrets of Christโ€™s heart as Mary did. No one ever felt, as Mary did, the consuming need to give herself to Him, to lose herself in Him like a little drop in the immensity of the ocean. This was Maryโ€™s unceasing prayer: to adore perpetually the Word made Flesh within her; to unite herself closely with Christ; to be immersed in Him and completely transformed in Him by love.

As a young man he decided to join the Augustinians in Lisbon, giving up a future of wealth and power to be a servant of God. Later when the bodies of the first Franciscan martyrs went through the Portuguese city where he was stationed, he was again filled with an intense longing to be one of those closest to Jesus himself: those who die for the Good News.

So Anthony entered the Franciscan Order and set out to preach to the Moors. But an illness prevented him from achieving that goal. He went to Italy and was stationed in a small hermitage where he spent most of his time praying, reading the Scriptures and doing menial tasks.

The call of God came again at an ordination where no one was prepared to speak. The humble and obedient Anthony hesitantly accepted the task. The years of searching for Jesus in prayer, of reading sacred Scripture and of serving him in poverty, chastity, and obedience had prepared Anthony to allow the Spirit to use his talents. Anthonyโ€™s sermon was astounding to those who expected an unprepared speech and knew not the Spiritโ€™s power to give people words.

Recognized as a great man of prayer and a great Scripture and theology scholar, Anthony became the first friar to teach theology to the other friars. Soon he was called from that post to preach to the Albigensians in France, using his profound knowledge of Scripture and theology to convert and reassure those who had been misled by their denial of Christโ€™s divinity and of the sacraments.

On June 13, he became very ill and asked to be taken back to Padua, where he died after receiving the last sacraments. Anthony was named a Doctor of the Church in 1946.

REFLECTION
Anthony should be the patron of those who find their lives completely uprooted and set in a new and unexpected direction. Like all saints, he is a perfect example of turning oneโ€™s life completely over to Christ. God did with Anthony as God pleasedโ€”and what God pleased was a life of spiritual power and brilliance that still attracts admiration today. He whom popular devotion has nominated as finder of lost objects found himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God.

All who are living with cancer, serious or chronic illness, as well as their caregivers, are warmly invited to a St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, June 16, immediately following the 6:30 pm Mass.

St. Peregrine is the patron saint of those who are sick, especially those facing cancer or long-term and terminal illnesses. This prayer service offers a peaceful time to seek comfort, strength, and hope through prayer and the support of our parish community.

This solemnity celebrates Godโ€™s creating and saving love made manifest in Jesus Christ. Pope Benedict XVI has shared that โ€œThe term โ€˜Sacred Heart of Jesusโ€™ denotes the entire mystery of Christ, the totality of his being, and his personโ€ฆ. Devotion to the Sacred Heartโ€ฆcalls for a fundamental attitude of conversion and reparation, of love and gratitude, apostolic commitment and dedication to Christ and his saving work.โ€

โ€œThe essential nucleus of Christianity is expressed in the Heart of Jesus; in Christ the whole of the revolutionary newness of the Gospel was revealed and given to us: the Love that saves us and already makes us live in Godโ€™s eternity. Even our shortcomings, our limitations, and our weaknesses must lead us back to the Heart of Jesus. His divine Heart calls to our hearts, inviting us to come out of ourselves, to abandon our human certainties to trust in him and, following his example, to make of ourselves a gift of love without reserveโ€.

The Heart of Jesus continues to beat for us in heaven, pouring out its infinite merits upon us through the sacraments. Devotion to the Sacred Heart remains one of the Churchโ€™s great treasures, and one of our greatest consolations. Our Lord promised St. Margaret Mary that โ€œsinners shall find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.โ€ Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

MEDITATION OF THE DAY
His Heart is alive with love for all of us. It is a love that is more than a feeling. His is a love that is willing to sacrifice. Look at the crown of thorns. The thorns remind us of our little difficulties, those little unpleasant events. But love bears it; love more than bears it because it knows that this is part of loving.

See the wound in the Heart. How did Jesus get this wound? When he was on the cross, a spear was thrust into his Heart. He did not run away. This is love! His love is more than just a good feeling; love exists when we are wounded. Our Lord said, โ€œMy Heart is open,โ€ open to all those who wish to come in, or go out, and come in again. He says, โ€œI love you a lot, even if it costs me my life.โ€

Let us pray
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.
I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.

Amen.

At Our Lady of Mercy Church, the annual Eucharistic procession took place immediately following the 12 noon Mass last Sunday as we celebrated Corpus Christi. Fr. Michael Kearney and Fr. Bill Vagenas, took turns carrying the monstrance that held the Blessed Sacrament.

Children scattered flower petals on the path in front of the procession line, as a tribute to our Eucharistic Lord.

This year's route covered the periphery of the church parking area, passed the circle drive, and went around the paved walkway along the back and side of the church, before returning through the patio door by the confessional.
Upon reentry into the church, eucharistic adoration and benediction followed, before the Most Blessed Sacrament was reposed.

A multigenerational crowd of believers participated in the procession, that served as a powerful affirmation and public witness to our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

In the words of Pope St. John Paul II, โ€œThe devout participation of the faithful in the Eucharistic procession on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a grace from the Lord which yearly brings joy to those who take part in itโ€ โ€œIn the humble signs of bread and wine, changed into the body and blood, Christ walks beside us as our strength and our food for the journey, and he enables us to become, for everyone, witnesses of hope.โ€
