When church people refer to “Matthew 18,” it is the gospel for this coming weekend that they are thinking of, with its advice about how Christians are to deal with controversies within the believing community. The good news in the reading is especially the last line: that Christ is among us always. Come to receive Christ’s gift of himself in word, sacrament, and community.

As the full cost and weight of discipleship becomes clear to Peter in the gospel this week, he reacts negatively out of his love for Jesus. Jesus speaks sharply to Peter out of love and we are invited to consider how we've grown in discipleship through the years. With grace and faith we look for the throughline of love that has carried us to this point in life.

Asante, Pr. Nixon Mwitula! Thank you Pr. Nixon, or joyfully proclaiming the good news and teaching us some Swahili! It was really great to know that your family was joining us from Tanzania via YouTube!

This past Sunday, we had a pulpit swap involving 3 of our Metropolitan Chicago Synod, ELCA congregations!

Pr. Nixon blessed St. Mark's with his exuberant sharing of the gospel at the Saturday and Sunday worship services. Deacon David led worship with Pr. Nixon. Thanks to Deacon David and many members of St. Mark's who made Pr. Nixon's weekend with us such a blessing!

Pr. Nixon and Tumaini Swahili Chapel Aurora in Chicago USA began worshiping at St. Mark's on the second Sunday afternoon of each month in May. To deepen our relationship in the ministry of the Gospel, we set up this pulpit exchange so everyone at St. Mark's could meet Pr. Nixon and feel his energy and passion!

Pr. Nixon also serves First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Logan Square in Chicago where he preaches on Sundays. Pastor Krista had the pleasure of preaching at First on Sunday morning. They are a small but mighty congregation who takes seriously their commission to serve their neighbors. They serve a free breakfast and lunch on Sundays for anyone but especially neighbors in need.

May this only be the beginning of our continued partnership!

Once again, members of St. Mark’s were grateful to lend a helping hand at the LSSI Mobile Food Pantry in cooperation with the Northern Illinois Food Bank. It’s always wonderful to see so many hands working together to help provide groceries—and a warm welcome—to our neighbors in the community. Thank you to our St. Mark’s volunteers who gave their time and energy to serve others. This is what it looks like to put our faith into action!
