And this is where we go into that John 3. 1 John chapter 3. But we know that when Christ appears, that we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And my focus on that purifies me. So the central revelation of what he did with the apostles before he sent them out was that power was never the point. And it will never be the point. The point is the resurrected heart, the surrendered heart. It's not, look what I can do for Jesus. It is, I will follow him no matter what it costs me. And I'll still choose him. That's what he wants. Power was never the point.

He gives us, his disciples, he gave it first to the apostles and then he gives it to us. Tremendous authority.
But with that authority he teaches do not chase power.
Do not become proud.
Remain dependent.
Love people.
Expect rejection.
Stay innocent.
Do not fear suffering.
Trust the Father.
Acknowledge him publicly.
Love me above everything.
Carry your cross.
Lose your life.
And trust me with the outcome.

Because the goal was never to produce people to do what he did. His goal was always to produce people to become like him.

Jesus gave his disciples extraordinary authority and then immediately stripped away their safety nets. No extra provisions, no financial reserves, no backup plan. This was not cruelty. It was wisdom. Power without dependence creates pride, and pride is the enemy of the kingdom heart. The disciples were sent out able to heal diseases but uncertain about where dinner was coming from. God intentionally keeps his most gifted servants in a posture of need because the resurrected heart never outgrows the prayer, Father, I need you. The greater the calling, the deeper the dependence required. Do not mistake your gifting for your sufficiency.

Jesus never promised his disciples that power would protect them from suffering. He promised them that suffering would come precisely because they carried his name. This is one of the most countercultural truths in all of Scripture. The Western church has largely taught that blessing means comfort and that hardship means something has gone wrong. But Jesus taught the opposite. He told his disciples they would be flogged, brought before governors, and hated. Then he told them not to be afraid. Suffering endured for his name is not evidence of his absence. It is, as Revelation 6 reveals, honored before the very altar of heaven. Your pain has not gone unnoticed.

Only when you see the kingdom with those eyes does the idea of surrender start to make sense. Because before you see the treasure, surrender looks foolish. Obedience looks restrictive. Sacrifice looks painful. And dying to yourself or even dying for him looks extreme. Right? You're called a fanatic. But once you see the treasure... Everything changes value. The value changes. Right? And you see this heart being developed through his life of how he changes the value of how to see things. Right? Because he's not simply trying to convince us that you need to give everything up. It's not about that. But our hearts with this world see that. It's all about just us giving everything up He's trying to show us something so beautiful that eventually our hearts say, why would I hold on to this when I can have that?

The five unprepared virgins did not lose their oil. They never built it. The five prepared virgins could not share theirs, not out of selfishness, but because intimacy with God carries a DNA that cannot be transferred. No one can want Jesus on your behalf. No one can build your longing for him in your place. First John 3 tells us that everyone who holds the hope of his appearing purifies themselves. This is the connection the church has largely abandoned. A genuine, burning desire for the return of Jesus is not a theological footnote. It is the fuel that keeps the lamp lit.

Yeast does not ask permission before it works. It quietly and completely transforms everything it touches. Jesus used this image deliberately because his intention for your life is total, not partial. He does not want access to your Sunday mornings while your money, sexuality, ambitions, and private thoughts remain off-limits. The same principle that makes yeast a picture of the kingdom also makes it a picture of sin, because both work the same way: quietly, thoroughly, and without stopping.
