About Our Church

The beginning of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church took its roots in the early 1900’s. Although not officially an established church, the first Greek immigrants who came to this "City of Lights," met their religious and cultural needs by attending All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet, Illinois, which was 25 miles from their homes and businesses. As early as the 1950’s

plans were discussed for a church in Aurora. The needs of our community were made known and were recognized by Fr. Emmanuel Lionakis, then priest of All Saints in Joliet. held services once a month on Saturdays at the Trinity Episcopalian Church in Aurora. This dedication and commitment by the Aurora immigrants eventually led to the purchase of their first real church home. The Church was located at 228 E Galena Blvd., and in 1962 the Archdiocese granted the building, chapel status. Fr. George Kiricoples, then priest of All Saints in Joliet, Illinois, began a regular schedule of services every other Saturday. As time went on, the need for a full-time priest was becoming more evident, and on September 1, 1965, St. Athanasios received its Ecclesiastical Charter along with the assignment of Fr. Steve Zanis as their first full time Priest. The following Priests have served our community:
1965-1968-Fr. Steve Zanis
1968-1975-Fr. Spyridon Kavvadias
1975-1977-Fr. Louis Greanias
1977-1980-Fr. John Chakos
1980-1986-Fr. William Cassis
1987-2002-Fr. Christopher Constantinides
2002 - 2019 - Rev. Dr. Peter J. Spiro
2019-present:Fr. Panagiotis Boznos

Our Jr. GOYAns and GOYAns had such a wonderful evening spending time with our friends at Bardwell Residences! Together, we enjoyed fellowship and made festive homemade cards for children in our surrounding communities who are battling cancer. We are so grateful for opportunities like these to bring generations together, serve others, and share Christ’s love with those who need it most! ❤️

What an incredible week at Saint Athanasios Summer Camp! ❤️

Over the past four days, our campers explored the Nicene Creed through prayer, worship, games, crafts, music, and fellowship as we journeyed together through our theme, “Faith Navigators: One God. One Church. One Creed.” It was beautiful to watch our children grow in their understanding of our Orthodox faith while building friendships and making wonderful memories.

Thank you to all of our campers and families for being part of this special week and a special thank you to our amazing volunteers. From our middle school and high school students to our college volunteers and adults, thank you for giving your time, energy, patience, and love to our kiddos. Your willingness to serve our children reflects Christ’s love, and this week would not have been possible without you.

Please continue to keep our campers, families, and volunteers in your prayers as they carry what they learned into their daily lives.

Glory to God for a beautiful week! ☦️ We can’t wait to see everyone again next summer!

Our Jr. GOYAns and GOYAns had a fantastic time at Funway today! We bowled, enjoyed pizza, and battled it out in laser tag. The kids had a blast—and they even beat our Youth Director, who had been talking a lot of game beforehand! 🎳🍕🔫 It was a fun day filled with laughter, friendly competition, and great memories together.
