Life is in the details. Listen to C. S. Lewis describe how our small, day-to-day decisions matter. “Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may launch an attack otherwise impossible.”

While we fret the big decisions—jobs, family changes, retirement—the action is in the endless small ones.

This morning, I woke up and had to decide between exercise and a leisurely cup of coffee. I chose coffee. Then other decisions followed. Is it necessary to take a shower and be rushed, or should I rely on the room deodorizer in my office? Do I clean up some of my morning mess, or should I tell my wife I will clean up when I get home, which I probably won’t? And what about reading Scripture? Where will that fit into my day? Ugh, I can hear the refrain about the value of morning devotions in my head. As I make the short drive to CCEF, do I tolerate a little grumbling because I had to stop for a long, slow train, or do I confess my grumbling?

I am only an hour into my day, still on autopilot, and I have yet to get online—then the decisions will really come fast and furious. Hundreds of other judgments and moments of discernment are to come before lunch. Though I am barely aware of them, their cumulative effect is what constitutes my personal character—they are me—and the judgments will affect many others.

Why Does the World Hate Us?
John 15:18-25
May 31, 2028

Why does the world hate us? What is “soft persecution?”

The world hates God and therefore they hate His children.

Why is Jesus hated? What did He do to provoke such anger?

How can we define the world?

The World Loves Its Own v. 18-19

To be hated by the world is a good thing.

The world sometimes has probable cause to hate Christians.

Yet, Christians are still hated even when they do the right thing.

This fallen world hates God and you represent God.

But, if you live, think and act like the world, the world will love you.

The World Hates Jesus and His Father v. 18, 20, 23, 25

Fallen man hates God. Let that truth sink in.

Why does the world hate God? Because He is holy, He is good.

There is no legitimate reason to hate God. (John 3:19-20)

“They hated me without a cause.” (Psalm 35:19 and 69:4)

The World Has No Excuse for Their Hatred v. 22, 24

All men are without excuse for truth has been plainly given to them.

Jesus exposes their sin. v. 22

Hatred in the face of contrary evidence. v. 24

Christians are living witnesses to a better way of life.

They persecuted the Master, they will persecute His followers.

Where does the battle rage today?

It is much safer as Christians simply to remain silent.

Comfort for living witnesses in a hostile world.

Welcome, Announcements, & Silent Prayer (10:25)

A warm welcome to those new to Westminster! Please fill out the Welcome Card in the pew in front of you and drop it in the offering plate so we can get to know you. Thank you!

Prelude: Use this time to prepare your hearts and minds for worship.

*Call to Worship: Psalm 107:1-3; 31-32 (Responsively)

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
for His steadfast love endures forever!

Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom He has redeemed from trouble

and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.

Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love,
for His wondrous works to the children of man!

Let them extol Him in the congregation of the people,
and praise Him in the assembly of the elders.

Salutation: John 15:9; Romans 1:7

As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Invocation

You, O God, are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In You our fathers trusted; they trusted, and You delivered them. To You they cried and were rescued; in You they trusted and were not put to shame. Today, Your people are again gathered before Your throne, crying out for Your deliverance from their sin, trusting in Your steadfast love, and praising You for Your righteousness. Bow down Your ear, O God, to hear the prayers of Your people. Accept their worship and strengthen their souls with Your presence. We pray as our Savior taught us to pray saying,

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

*Hymn of Worship #100: Holy, Holy, Holy!

Confession of Faith: from 2 Corinthians 4:13, Romans 10:9-10, Hebrews 11:1 (In Unison)

I believe in the One true and living God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator of all things, the Ruler of heaven and earth, and the Author of my life.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God—my Savior, my Redeemer, my soon-coming King. He died for my sins, rose from the grave, and now reigns in power and glory. By His blood, I am forgiven. By His stripes, I am healed. By His Spirit, I am made new.

I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord over my life. He is my strength, my shield, my provider, and my peace. I am no longer bound by fear, guilt, or shame. I am free—redeemed by grace and called by name. I believe the Word of God is true—living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It is my foundation, my weapon, and my light in darkness.

I live by faith, not by sight. I walk in power, not in defeat. I declare I am who God says I am: I am a child of God, chosen and dearly loved. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I am filled with the Holy Spirit, anointed for purpose, destined for glory. I have the victory through Christ Jesus. Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. I believe, therefore I speak. And what I speak, I will see. In Jesus’ name—so be it. AMEN.

Prayer of Confession

Our Father, although You are a holy God, Who cannot look upon sin, look upon Christ our Savior and forgive us for His sake. You have promised us that if we confess our sins, You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. For if we do sin, we have an Advocate before Your throne, Jesus Christ the Righteous, and He is the propitiation for our sins. Give us Your pardon by Your mercies, dear Father, for You have clothed us in Christ’s righteousness. We ask also that You would give us an increase of the grace of Your Holy Spirit, so that we may learn the wisdom of Your ways and walk in Your holy paths, for Your glory and the good of our neighbor. Amen.

Silent Prayer

Assurance of Pardon: from Romans 4:24-25

Righteousness will be counted to us who believe in Him Who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, Who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. AMEN.

*Hymn # 689: Be Still, My Soul

Offering/ Prayer: Psalm 116:12, 14

How can I repay the LORD for all His goodness to me? I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His people.
