As we open the first Sunday of this new year, I would like to share a hymn written by famous German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
"Surrounded by such true and gentle powers.
So wondrously consoled and without fear,
Thus will I spend with you these final hours
And then together enter a new year."

노래: Dietrich Bonhoeffer(본회퍼)자막: 과천교회 하늘행복 미디어팀

Bad religion has always favored escape, passivity, irresponsibility. By dint of fixing one's eyes on heaven above, one does not see what takes place on earth here below.

The upward-looking must come to an understanding with the forward-looking.

We believe that our God (up above) calls us to go forward. Our faith in an absolute does not immobilize us in contemplation, but invites us to discover Him according to our means of creating a world inspired by His love: a world where justice dwells and where people love one another.

So those who imagine that they are called to contemplation because they are attracted by contemplation, when the common duties of existence steadily block this path, do well to realise that our own feelings and preferences are very poor guides when it comes to the robust realities and stern demands of the Sprit. St. Paul did not want to be an apostle to the Gentiles. He wanted to be a clever and appreciated young Jewish scholar, and kicked against the pricks. St. Ambrose and St. Augustine did not want to be overworked and worried bishops. Nothing was farther from their intention. St. Cuthbert wanted the solitude and freedom of his heritage on the Farne; but he did not often get there. St. Francis Xavier's preference was for an ordered life close to his beloved master, St. Ignatius. At a few hours' notice he was sent out to be the Apostle of the Indies and never returned to Europe again. Henry Martyn, the fragile and exquisite scholar, was compelled to sacrifice the intellectual life to which he was so perfectly fitted for the missionary life to which he felt he was decisively called. In all these, a power beyond themselves decided the direction of life. Yet in all we recognise not frustration, but the highest of all types of achievement. Thing like this-and they are constantly happening-gradually convince us that the overruling reality of life is the Will and Choice of a Spirit acting not in a mechanical but in a living and personal way; and that the spiritual life does not consist in mere individual betterment, or assiduous attention to one's own soul, but in a free and unconditional response to that Spirit's pressure and call, whatever the cost may be.

Every obedience, however small (if any obedience is ever small) quickens our sensitivity to God and our capacity to understand him and so makes more real our sense of his presence.

Ministers are like trumpets, which make no sound if breath be not breathed into them. Or like Ezekiel's wheels, which move not unless the Spirit move them. Or like Elisha's servants whose presence does no good unless Elisha's spirit be there also.
-John Flavel

When the world seems devoid of hope, it is hard to give thanks. Realistically, I cannot blame them. Yet, I hear of many who faithfully stay together helping one another, who, despite living in the streets and eating the discards of others, sacrifice what they have so others may survive. For these I give thanks.
I hear of others who despite persecution and risk of death stay to minister and serve the poor and hungry in your name, all the while giving thanks for your love and bounty. For these I give thanks.
To the one l***r who returned and gave thanks you said, "Your faith has made you well." Your salvation brought healing which restored him to God. Now clean he could find meaningful work and return to a full life.
Oh, the miracle of thanksgiving brought to us in the lessons of life. Praise and majesty be yours, Lord. For the healing of thanksgiving, thank you. Amen
