Thank you to everyone who came by Booth 212 this week. We met parish staff who are holding a great deal together with spreadsheets, sticky notes and memory, and hanging in there.

"Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." Matthew 5:16, the theme of this year's ICSC conference.

It is easy to hear that as a line about visibility. Read it in a parish office on a Tuesday morning and it is about something smaller and harder: the family who came for a baptism and has not been called since, the woman on the homebound list nobody has been to see in five weeks.

The light is not the campaign. It is whether anyone is still looking for them.

We drive to New Orleans in the morning.

Stewardship does not start with the ask. It starts at the font, at the altar and at the graveside, in the few hours of a year when a parish has someone's whole attention.

A family comes to have a child baptized. A couple comes to be married. A son calls about his mother's funeral. What happens in the weeks after that is what decides the depth of their connection to the parish.

Preparation and pastoral care are not next door to stewardship. They are where it begins.

There is a folded card in every ICSC tote bag this year with our name on it. The front says: Twelve Questions Your Records System Cannot Answer.

Twelve questions about your parish, not about you. No name, no email, nothing to send back. Just the twelve, and a rule: check a box only if you can answer yes right now, without looking it up and without asking anyone else.

Most parishes we talk with check about half. That is not a failure. That is what a binder and one person's memory can carry.

A parish staff member once described a Friday morning to us: a family needed a baptismal certificate, it was not where it should have been, and two people lost the morning looking for it.

Then she said the part we hear over and over. "It is a lot to keep up with when this is only a piece of our jobs."

The care was happening. Keeping track of it was the problem. That difference is most of what we do.

We are New Orleans bound. Ruth and I will be at the ICSC Annual Stewardship Conference September 20 to 23, at Booth 212 the whole time the hall is open.

The theme this year is Matthew 5:16, shining the light of Christ for all to see. For the parish staff we talk with every week, that light usually looks like a certificate ready on time, a visit that did not get forgotten, and a family who felt known on the hardest day of their year.
