We were grateful to welcome Lydia Brownback for yesterday's McKnight Lectures as she reminded us that our identity is found in Christ alone, regardless of our marital state.

"Singleness isn’t second best. To the contrary, it’s a privileged calling with unique blessings to enjoy and to pour out for others."

"In valuing Christ, our own value becomes clear. Being a husband or a wife or a mom or dad isn’t what gives us a respectable identity. Our whole identity is bound up with the person of Christ, and that’s true for every believer, married or single."

It might seem odd—even a little offensive—to criticize the seemingly
unobjectionable statement, “I married my best friend.” But there are ways that
marriage has been reduced over time to a purely private relationship between a man
and a woman that we evaluate by how well it satisfies our emotional and sexual needs.
During yesterday's McKnight lectures, Dr. Green offered an alternate vision of marriage
as a demanding, enduring, and formative institution established by God for the common good, while also taking stock of the status of friendship amid an expanding epidemic of loneliness.
