The readings this weekend highlight that the Church’s mission begins in the Trinity: the Father sends the Son, the Father and Son send the Spirit, and the Spirit gathers us into communion with God.

That means the goal of the Church is not simply to run programs, maintain buildings, or manage an institution. As important as these things are, they are not the deepest goal. Our mission is to bring people into communion with the Trinity, to share in God’s own life. We are not trying to build a religious business. We are being formed into the family of God.

Dear Faithful of the Diocese of Portland,
Yesterday, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, shared his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. It certainly addresses a timely topic—that of Artificial Intelligence (AI)—but, more importantly, the timelessness of Church teaching on human dignity.
I echo the words of Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: "It is a powerful reminder that no technology can replace a child of God, and all technology should be placed at the service of helping humanity thrive.”

Pentecost gives us a beautiful image. In the first reading from Acts, the disciples are “all in one place together.” They are gathered in unity. But when the Holy Spirit comes, He does not make them all sound the same. He sends them out speaking in different tongues, so that each person hears “in his native language” the mighty works of God. In the second reading, St. Paul says there are “different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit,” “different forms of service but the same Lord,” and one body with many parts. In the Gospel, Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Then He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.

Pentecost is not chaos. It is not everyone doing whatever he or she wants. But neither is Pentecost lifeless uniformity. Pentecost is communion for mission: one Spirit, one Church, many gifts, many languages, many places.
