Two key words that emerge from the text – permeated by the perspective and proposal of conversion – are “relationships”, a way of being Church; and “bonds”, marked by the “exchange of gifts” between the Churches lived dynamically and, therefore, converting processes. The fifth and final chapter of the Encyclical, “Love for Love,” develops the communitarian, social, and missionary dimension of any authentic devotion to the Heart of Christ, which, as it “leads us to the Father,” also “sends us forth to our brothers and sisters” (163). Indeed, love for one’s brothers and sisters is the greatest gesture we can offer Him “to return love for love” (166).

Looking at the history of spirituality, the Pope recalls that St. Charles de Foucauld's missionary commitment made him a “universal brother”: “Allowing himself to be shaped by the heart of Christ, he sought to shelter the whole of suffering humanity in his fraternal heart” (179).

Pope Francis then speaks of “reparation”: as St. John Paul II explained, “by entrusting ourselves together to the heart of Christ, ‘over the ruins accumulated by hatred and violence, the greatly desired civilization of love, the Kingdom of the heart of Christ, can be built’” (182).

The Diocese of Savannah is aware of the “black mass” being held in Atlanta this Friday. In solidarity with the Archdiocese of Atlanta and to counter this attack on the Catholic Church, it is recommended to the faithful that a holy hour, rosary, or other prayer of reparation and penance be prayed on or before October 25, 2024 at 9 pm.

There will be a holy hour at the Catholic Pastoral Center, Savannah on Friday at 3 pm.

Thank you to all who have helped both parish and neighbor begin the clean up from Hurricane Helene. It has been a long week and will be a continuous recovery for some of our brothers and sisters. The image presents a good indication of the path of the storm and those who continue to be affected. We are especially grateful to emergency responders and utility personnel who are working around the clock to restore power and to care for those who have experienced loss from the storm.

Some of our parish campuses have not had power (or regular water service) restored. Please check with your local community to confirm the weekend Mass schedule or any other modifications to planned activities.

Catholic Charities of South Georgia is working with Catholic Charities USA to provide disaster relief in the areas that may be underserved. Information for those who need assistance or who would like to make a donation toward recovery efforts can be found at www.diosav.org.

Please continue to pray for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene across our Diocese and throughout the Southeast:

Loving and compassionate God, you are our comfort and strength in times of sudden disaster, crisis, or chaos. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, sustain those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through Christ, our rock and redeemer. Amen.

May we be blessed with compassion and patience as we continue to recover. We meet in our prayers and Rejoice in the hope that the Lord provides.
