Friends of the Summerville Cemetery - Chattooga County

Friends of the Summerville Cemetery - Chattooga County Please join us on our journey to revitalize and maintain the historic Summerville Cemetery where many of our loved ones have been laid to rest. WE VOLUNTEER.

The Friends of the Summerville Cemetery is a dedicated volunteer group that was formed to assist with the maintenance and improvement of the cemetery grounds for our loved ones and our community. We recognize that there is an enormous amount of work to be completed, in order to restore the grounds. This is why we've already proactively partnered with the Summerville Cemetery Corporation and the Su

mmerville City Council with a united and common goal to improve and enhance the property. Both parties have been very appreciative of our concern and assistance with the property. Being very transparent, the maintenance and labor costs are expensive and we can all agree that the price of everything continues to increase. So, what do we do? We volunteer as a group to pick up trash and limbs, trim the vines from the fence and remove the overgrown shrubbery that has overtaken family burial markers, to name a few. We join forces and will work together in a cooperative effort to help our community. We hope that you will like and share our page, if you sincerely have a positive interest in volunteering and assisting in our goals. You're encouraged to watch the page for meetings, organized clean-up days and volunteer opportunities. Thank you for joining the page and caring about Summerville and Chattooga County, GA. Please note that negative comments will not be tolerated and will be deleted. If you want to make a difference - VOLUNTEER.

The City of Summerville and the Chattooga Historical Society will be dedicating this plaque Sunday, July 13th at 1:30pm, at the Summerville Cemetery. The Historical Society placed this plaque in the oldest section of cemetery. It tells a brief history of the cemetery and is in memory of more than 600 early Chattoogans buried there with no existing marker.

Yesterday was an exciting history day in the cemetery. The work is underway to preserve stones that have been covered and to restore the stones that have been broken or fallen to the ground. This phase of the restoration is being completed by the City of Summerville with donation dollars. The “Friends” are grateful for the continued progress and can’t wait to share more photos in the future.

SAVE THE DATE—We have had a lot of requests for a living history tour of the cemetery. In cooperation with the City of Summerville and Mainstreet we will be offering 2 tours on Oct.20th. After viewing the quilt show and train at the depot come and learn about some long ago interesting Chattoogans.

Due to the strong storms over the weekend, we have many displaced flower arrangements. These flowers have been picked up and placed by the trash receptacles or in the baskets on the fence.
