History of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church
The pioneer forebears journeyed here from their homes in Norway bringing only their most precious possessions - of which the family Bible was the most treasured of all. For years they met in the homes and neighboring schoolhouse, often referred to in the records as Eilertson Skolehuset. The Reverend O.N. Bergh often drove out from Audubon to deliver the sermon. Sometimes traveling evangelists or missionaries would lead worship. On January 17, 1893, a small group met to organize a congregation and to formulate a constitution. The name St. Petri Menighet av Becker County was officially adopted. Within a short period of time a plot of ground was purchased for the sum of $25. This is the present site of our church. Work was immediately begun on the cemetery. Brush was cleared and some lots plotted. In 1894 several more families joined the congregation and the Ladies Aid was organized. In 1896 it was decided that one month of parochial school be held. September 30, 1896, the members of the congregation were asked to bring logs to the sawmill during the winter and furnish 500 feet of lumber toward the new church building. By January 6, 1902, enough material had been provided so that actual construction could begin. January 20, 1904, the congregation could for the first time hold its annual meeting in their new church. August 16th of 1925, a tornado destroyed the little church that so many had worked faithfully to build. Hundreds of people gathered. A remarkable silence filled the hearts of all those who had done so much to erect the edifice. The altar and the statue of Christ was the only thing not crushed. In 1926 the new church building was constructed. In 1973 new classrooms and additional worship space was added. Many other improvements and additions to the property and building have happened over the years. St. Peter's has been served by fifteen full-time ministers over it's existence. The current pastor is the Reverend Dr. Ruth E. Hetland.
