Jesus tells His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem to suffer many things, be killed, and on the third day be raised. There is no get-out-of-suffering card for Jesus or for us. We will suffer BUT never alone! In Holy Baptism, we are crucified with Jesus so that our suffering is His suffering. He shoulders our pain to bring us into the greatest gain! No matter the depths of suffering, Jesus is there to comfort and carry.

This repurposed barbed wire reminds us that no suffering is meaningless but the very means by which Jesus does some of His most profound work in our lives. Jesus is at work in every part of our lives (especially those times of suffering) to (re)make us into the person He had in His mind from before the World was created. Remember your Baptism when you suffer and see those nail-scarred hands shaping and molding you into His masterpiece. He went to Jerusalem to suffer so that you will never be alone in your suffering. He’ll bring us through suffering into eternal glory.
