Dear Faithful of the Diocese of Portland,

Yesterday, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, shared his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. It certainly addresses a timely topic—that of Artificial Intelligence (AI)—but, more importantly, the timelessness of Church teaching on human dignity.

I echo the words of Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: "It is a powerful reminder that no technology can replace a child of God, and all technology should be placed at the service of helping humanity thrive.”
