The Power of a Song
by Darla Noble and Joyverse

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Back in the 1980s, Christian singer and songwriter Steve Green released a series of Bible verses put to music for children. Still available as CD and digital download formats, the Hide ‘Em In Your Heart songs were part of our family’s daily listening pleasure.

One of the songs is taken from Psalm 56:3-4, which simply says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise.”

These sixteen simple words have taken my children and me through some tough and scary situations. Even now, as adults with children of their own, when we encounter something scary, worrisome, or intimidating, we sing, “When I am afraid I will trust in you; I will trust in you; I will trust in you….”

And you can, too!

You can trust in God to calm your fears, put a blanket of peace over your troubled heart and mind, and keep you safely wrapped in His loving arms.

Setting Bible verses to music is a great way to memorize them. Then, you’ve “got them” when you need them. Why not take some time and set today’s verse to a memorable tune? (Hint: the chorus of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” works remarkably well.)

Reflection

How has God helped me overcome my fears in the past? What fears do I still need to entrust to Him?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for protecting me. Thank You for being there to calm my fears and for letting me know You are more powerful than anything that comes my way. In Your Son Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

The Gift of YOU
by Darla Noble

Romans 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

Madison, Anna’s nine-year-old daughter, is a tomboy through and through.

There are only one or two dresses in her closet for those occasions when nothing else will do. The problem arose, however, when Madison didn’t think her aunt’s wedding was one of those special occasions.

After trying to reason with Madison, Anna finally said, “This day isn’t about you or what you want. This is your aunt’s special day and you are going to do everything you can to help make that happen — and dressing appropriately is one of those things.”

The same thing can be said about how you and I present ourselves to God.

We might not always agree with the way God wants us to present ourselves in service or when responding to others, but the truth of the matter is: It’s not about us. It’s about God and pleasing Him because He is holy and He deserves our very best all the time.

What attitudes, habits, or actions are you “wearing” that are not pleasing to God? Take definitive action today to change — to “dress” your spirit for the occasion of serving Him.

Reflection

What are my talents and abilities? How can I use them to serve God and others?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Please forgive me for the times I have failed to sacrifice anything for You. Please cleanse me, both inside and out. May my life be holy and acceptable to You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

The Battle Is the Lord’s
by Darla Noble

Deuteronomy 20:4

For the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Today’s verse says it all: you are not alone. God is with you. You don’t have to fight your battles or overcome on your own.

Do you remember God’s dramatic miracle on the Red Sea? (See Exodus 14:15-31.) This story has been preserved to give you confidence that God will fight for you as He did when He fought for His people thousands of years before you were born.

He said, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm” (Exodus 14:13-14 NLT).

Imagine watching the drama! The Israelites crossed the Red Sea through a dry path God created in the middle of the waters.

The entire enemy army tried to follow the Israelites to attack them, but God said, “No!” He got rid of the dry path, and all the enemy troops died.

Yes, today, God will fight and overcome for you. Your enemies may be bigger than you are, but He is bigger than us all.

Let God wrap you in His loving arms. Trust in Him that He will keep His promises to protect you, direct you, provide for you and bless you.

Reflection

What are some things I can do to be more aware of God’s miracles all around me?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Please help me trust in You and experience Your miracles all around me today. Please go with me, fight my enemies for me, and keep me safe in Your loving care. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Hurdles and Shoelaces
by Darla Noble

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win. Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.

My son, Zach, was a cross-country track runner in junior high and high school.

He was good, breaking school records and finishing in the top three in all but two races in his “career.” Zach’s success garnered him a lot of attention. It would have been easy for him to see himself as a one-man team. But that’s not who Zach is.

I’ll never forget one particular meet when a girl he had known since elementary school took a misstep over one of the hurdles she was jumping, causing one of her shoes to come untied.

When she landed, she tripped over the shoelace and fell face forward onto the track. Zach and a girl from the team were the first ones to come to her aid, assuring her it was nothing to worry about; there would be other races. And before Katy ran in the next track meet, Zach took the time to make sure her shoelaces were securely tied.

We all need someone like Zach in our life — especially our spiritual life.

We need someone who, when we “trip over our shoelaces,” will encourage us, empathize with us, hold us accountable, and mentor us toward a deeper and more personal relationship with the Lord.

Reflection

Sin is a near-constant hurdle in everyone’s life. On who and on what do I depend to help me move beyond the sin that tries to trip me up?

Prayer

Dear God, Please give me the strength and courage to run my life’s race toward You. Help me keep my eyes fixed upon the prize: seeing You in the glory of heaven. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
