Listening is easy when you are only waiting for your turn to speak. Understanding is harder because it requires you to temporarily silence your own opinions.

Too many conversations become competitions. While one person is speaking, the other is already preparing a defense, an argument, or a clever response. Words are heard, but the meaning behind them is missed.

Real listening requires patience. It means paying attention not only to what someone says, but also to what they struggle to say. Sometimes the most important part of a conversation exists between the words.

You do not have to agree with someone to understand them. Understanding simply means giving their perspective enough respect to hear it completely before judging it.

Wisdom is not always found in having the perfect response. Sometimes it is found in the silence where you finally understand another human being.

Listen to learn, not merely to answer.
