On Wednesday before the crucifixion, Jesus remained in Bethany. It's likely that Jesus and his disciples had a "down day," resting in preparation for the Passover.
Even though Wednesday was a quiet day, we do know that Jesus attended a meal at the home of Simon the L***r, which is recorded in all four gospels. Simon, who once had leprosy, was no longer sick and it's commonly thought that Jesus had healed him. While at the meal, a woman that Mark identifies as Mary, came to Jesus with an alabaster vessel of expensive perfume. Scripture tells us that Mary broke the jar and poured out the perfume on Jesus, anointing his head. Falling down before him, she began weeping and wiping Jesus’ feet with her hair. She also anointed his feet with the expensive perfume.
The disciples were outraged at such an extravagant act and began to complain about it, saying the perfume could have been sold and used to feed the poor. But Jesus corrected them, saying:
“Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” (Matthew 26: 10-13)
It was after this act of love and sacrifice that Judas, who was the treasurer of the disciples, decided to betray Jesus. He went that night to the leading priests and asked them, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” (Matthew 26: 25) They offered him 30 pieces of silver and he immediately began looking for opportunities to give Jesus to them.
Today we see the stark contrast in those around Jesus. We see the complete devotion of Mary, who didn't care what others had to say about her, but broke open her best to anoint her Lord. And we see Judas, who was disgusted with what Mary had done, and set out to betray Jesus for 30 coins.
Notice how much of the Holy Week has been centered on money:
* Jesus cleansed the temple of those who were cheating others in God's house.
* Jesus watched the temple treasury and made note of the poor widow, giving her two mites.
* Jesus answered questions from the religious leaders about paying taxes
* Jesus received an extravagant and loving anointment of expensive oil, acknowledging the gesture as related to his impending death.
* Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.
There are many lessons contained in this last week before Jesus' death and here are a few that stand out to me....
1. Don't become obsessed with money
2. Trust Jesus in all things
3. Whether we have a lot or a little, when we give it to Jesus, we are blessed
4. True worship involves sacrifice
5. Jesus takes our brokenness and makes something beautiful of it
Blessings To All,
Sherry ♥️
