Resurrection Sunday - Don't Expect Normal

Luke 24:5-6a – And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.”

Romans 8:34–35 – Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

The ladies went to Jesus’ tomb with normal expectations. A crucifixion means you will find a dead body. As they looked, the angel’s words cut through their despair, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” They remembered Jesus’ words predicting His death and resurrection.
In our normal minds, we can think of many things that can separate us from the love of God. However, in Romans Paul says, NO, we are talking about Jesus, the resurrected Son of God. His ability to love us is not normal. Don't expect normal with Jesus. His resurrection power and redeeming love is not dead, it is alive!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, we are thankful that your love is not normal. Though our sin separated us from you, your love is greater. You laid down your life on the cross as the payment for our sins. Even death could not separate us from your love, as you broke death’s power through your resurrection. Hallelujah, Jesus, you are alive! Amen.

Saturday - The Silence of Waiting

Luke 23:53-55 – Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.

Romans 8:18 – For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Stillness. A numbness. Denial. “There’s no way that Jesus is dead.” “Is this it?” I’m sure that the disciples had difficulty in what they just witnessed. They had been following Jesus for the past three years and had seen the miracles he had performed. Yet, he had been placed in a tomb, wrapped in linen. Good thing that was not the end of the story.
Jesus knew this would happen. He told his disciples all that was to take place. Jesus had considered that suffering, dying on a cross, and going to the grave was worth it for us. Worth it so that we too could share in his glory and become heirs with Christ. In Romans 8, Paul sees the suffering of Christ and wants to join in with his suffering. I believe he says this, because he is able to see some of the glory of God! And he says, “The sufferings can’t compare to the glory that we will see!” So, we too should see the sufferings of our lives as small potatoes in comparison to the everlasting glory that is waiting for us.

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for being willing to go to the grave for me. Thank you for your suffering. Thank you for not ending the story there. I pray I see a taste of the glory that is waiting for us in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good Friday - The Crucifixion

Romans 8:13 – For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Luke 23 – (22a) A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death.” (41b) “for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” (47) Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.”

Jesus said if we want to follow him we need to take up our cross daily. As we meditate on Jesus’ crucifixion, he asks us to crucify our own flesh, to put to death our evil deeds and bury our sins. If we share in his sufferings, we may also share in his glory.
Jesus was innocent. He did not deserve the punishment, abuse, beating, ridicule, torture, pain, anguish, taunting, agony, and suffering that he bore. However, he was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities.
A few days before, Jesus had explained that a grain of wheat buried in the earth had to die before it could produce a huge harvest. When we put our sins to death, we will reap a harvest of righteousness. What sins are we willing, even eager, to bury today?

PRAYER: Thank you, Jesus, for humbling yourself and being obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Help us, by your Spirit, to put to death the sin that so easily entangles so that we might bear much fruit and be joint heirs with you.
