LEGACY SUNDAY SERMON RECAP

Sunday, September 13, 2026
Deuteronomy 6:1-12

Deuteronomy is often called the “book of repetition.” It reiterates what had been given previously because much of the former generation had died, and a new generation was preparing to enter the Promised Land. God is intentional about repeating what He does not want us to forget. According to the law of most mention, what God repeatedly emphasizes reveals what He considers important. Repetition is not redundancy—it is reinforcement.

In Chapter 6, Moses prepared the children of Israel to enter the Promised Land. He reminded them that God’s Word was not only to be heard—it was to be obeyed, treasured in their hearts, taught to their children, and passed from generation to generation. They were also warned: When you enter places you did not build and enjoy blessings you did not produce, do not forget the Lord who brought you out!

POWERFUL TRUTHS:

• No child is a mistake. God knew us before we were born and created us for His purpose and pleasure.

• We honor our grandparents and great-grandparents whose prayers, sacrifices, and faith helped pave the way for us. We stand on their shoulders!

• If you did not have a praying grandmother or grandfather, God provides spiritual parents—spiritual surrogates—who will cover you in prayer. Above all, Jesus prayed for us!

• We have both a legacy and a responsibility: We must pass the torch and tell the next generation about Jesus.

• God’s Word is our manual for life, marriage, parenting, and relationships. Wisdom does not push our children away; love, truth, and a godly example draw them closer.

• Love must live in our hearts—not merely on our lips. Manipulation is not love, and stubbornness is not obedience.

• One of the greatest dangers for parents and grandparents is failing to model the faith we expect our families to follow. Our families must see us hearing and doing God’s Word.

• Obeying God allows us to truly live—not merely exist. Israel’s disobedience turned a short journey into 40 years of wandering, and an entire generation missed the promise.

• Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded. His disobedience cost him entrance into the Promised Land. Sometimes, when we refuse to love and obey God, precious things become buried on the mountain instead of carried into the promise.

Let us live gratefully, love sincerely, obey fully, and never forget who brought us out. May we leave our families more than possessions—may we leave them a living legacy of faith.
