Your Greatest Competition

The toughest opponent you will ever face isn't the coworker who got the promotion, the sibling who seems to have it all together, or the friend whose life looks a little shinier on social media. It's the person already staring back at you in the mirror. When your goal is to become the best version of yourself, you never have to compete with anyone else again. In the race we called life, your goal should simply to be to run the race better than you did yesterday. Ask yourself if you a better brother or sister than you were last year? Are you a more patient parent, or more present son or daughter? Are you better friend than you were yesterday or last year? It's only you on the scoreboard. Imagine if the disciples had spent their three years with Jesus jockeying for position instead of pursuing purpose. Actually, we don't have to imagine it — they did exactly that. In Mark 9, they walked the road arguing about who among them was the greatest. Jesus didn't join the debate or crown a winner. He sat them down and flipped the whole framework: "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all". Jesus put the focus on commitment instead of competition. In the race you are running be committed to being as faithful as you can be. Be the best servant you can be and you will not have time to focus on what others are doing or not doing. In fact pray for their success as they run their own race.

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Galatians 6:4-5

The 7 Seasons of Your Life

If something is happening in your life and you are wondering why God is allowing it to happen.....just wait. You see, there are seven season listed in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Seven signifies the number of completion and the number of perfection. When God speaks of seasons, He lets us know that everything will not be rosy, but IT WILL GET BETTER. Ecclesiastes 3 lays out the seven seasons for us: There will...............(1) a season to be born, and a season to die; (2) a season to plant, and a season to harvest; (3) a season to weep, and a season to laugh; (4) a season to mourn, and a season to dance; (5) a season to hold on, and a season to let go; (6) a season to be still, and a season to speak up; and (7)
a season for conflict, and a season for peace.

So here's my question for you today: which season are you in right now? Maybe you're planting seeds and nothing's blooming yet. Maybe you're grieving something you didn't expect to lose. Maybe you're in a long winter, waiting. Whatever season you're in don't fret. Seasons change. That's the whole point. The same God who ordered these seven seasons has already ordered your next one. A new season is coming, and it's a beautiful reason to be hopeful, because God has something new, wonderful, and beautiful in store for you.

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1

When We Fail Each Other

Donnie McClurkin wrote a song that explains that we fall down but we get up. The song could be about you failing yourself, but often in failing ourselves, we also fail others who look up to us and depend on us. If you've spent any real time in community with other believers, you already that we let each other down. A brother forgets to follow through. A sister speaks a careless word in a hard moment. Someone we trusted disappoints us, and somewhere down the line, we become the one who disappoints someone else. It's tempting to read that as bad news, but Scripture never promised us a family without problems or without failure. It promised us something better. It promises us a way through it. Life is to short to be upset with others because they do not always consider our feelings. After the hurt goes away, is the friendship or relationship also gone? It does not have to be as we learn to forgive. When we fail ourselves and each other let us give the same grace and forgiveness we would want to be shown. Failure does not disqualify you for grace or forgiveness. If you have someone to forgive, do not put it off, for tomorrow is not promised to you or to them. Amen.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

Encourage Yourselves

Sometimes the world has a way of only pointing out what's wrong with you. Sometimes you only hear about what you haven't accomplished; what you still lack; or where you've fallen short. If you let it, that voice will keep score of your every failure which can serve to devalue your self-worth. David knew that feeling better than most. In the first Book of Samuel, he came home to Ziklag and found the city burned to the ground. His wives and children were taken captive. And to make it worse, his own men turned on him and talked about stoning him. Everything was gone. Everyone was against him. There was no one left to remind him who he was. He didn't wait for someone else to speak life into him. He didn't deny how bad things were. He simply turned to the One who never changes and reminded himself of what was still true. That is when David encouraged himself. When the world only shows you what's wrong, encourage yourself in what's still right: God's love for you that never runs out. His grace covers our every sin, and we rise each day in good health. You don't need everyone else to encourage you. Encourage yourself in the Lord and watch Him turn the situation around, just like He did for David.

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. 1 Samuel 30:6

When You Pray....Believe

In the Book of ActsPeter was locked in prison and chained between two guards. Soldiers were standing watch at each door. Peter was to be executed the next day. But he had a praying brothers and sisters. That very night, an angel awakend Peter. The gates opened on their owned after Peters chain fell off. He then walked right past the guards and departed out of the gate. He went to the house where everyone had been praying for him.
He knocked and a servant girl was so overjoyed to hear his voice that she forgot to open the door. She ran back and told everyone in the house that Peter was at the door. Though that is what they were inside praying for, they didn't believe it was Peter. They believed it must have been his angel. The very thing they had been praying for was standing on the porch, knocking, while they argued about whether it was even possible. Isn't that so often what happens to us? We pray, and we keep praying, but somewhere along the way we stop expecting the door to actually open. We ask God for the miracle and then act surprised when it happens. Pray....then believe my brothers and sisters.

"Peter continued knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished." Acts 12:16

Looking for You

In the Book of Luke, Jesus told a story about a shepherd with a hundred sheep who noticed one was missing. He left the ninety-nine out in the country and went after the one that had wandered away, and he kept searching until he found it. When he did, he didn't scold it all the way home. Instead he lifted it onto his shoulders and carried it back rejoicing, then called his friends together to celebrate. God pursues people the same way especially if they are lost. He is not indifferent because you walked or even ran away from Him. So, if you have ever felt separated from the flock or distant from God, forgotten, or too far gone to matter to Him, this story says otherwise. If you are lost, no matter how you got there, God will find you where you are and will take you back with arms open wide. You are the one He is looking for.

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. Luke 15:4-5

Wait On the Lord

Isaiah wrote to a people who were exhausted and worn down by fear and an uncertain future. To them is looked nothing like they had hoped for. Into that situation, God asked a few simple questions: hast thou not known, hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary? The people were tired. God wasn't.
He promised them that the same strength that never runs dry was available to them and anyone willing to wait on Him.....not waiting as in doing nothing, but waiting as in trusting in Him and leaning and looking to Him instead of to their own strength. Even the young and strong eventually stumble. But those who wait on the Lord are promised something different. The are promised renewed strength and endurance and the ability to rise above circumstances that would otherwise wear them down. My brothers and sisters, If you are tired today, tired of waiting, tired of trying, and tired of holding on, then this promise still stands. God given strength has never run out and it was never reserved for people who have it all together. It is for the weary who are willing to wait on Him.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:30-31

God Can Use You Too

Before he was Paul, he was Saul, and he hunted down followers of Jesus, approved of Stephen's murder, and dragged believers from their homes to prison. If you had asked anyone in the early church who God would never use, they likely would have pointed straight toward him. But on a road to Damascus, a blinding light stopped Saul in his tracks, and the voice of the very Jesus he was persecuting called his name. That encounter didn't erase his past. It redirected it. The man who once tried to destroy the church became the one who planted it across the world. He also wrote much of the New Testament and gave his life proclaiming the gospel attempted to destroy. God didn't wait for Saul to clean himself up first. He chose him in the middle of his worst chapter. So, whatever you've done, whoever you've hurt, however far you think you've wandered from God, He can still use you. He has always specialized in choosing flawed people to do what only He could get the glory for. If He could use Saul, He can use you.

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16

Out of the Darkness

Every person will experience dark times. The dark times are difficult, sometimes so difficult that you want no one else to know what you are struggling with. Not being able to pay your bills, struggling with addiction, losing faith in God, experiencing violence in relationships, and experiencing extreme loneliness, all of these represent dark times. Consider that in the first chapter of Genesis God's first vocal commandment was "let there be light". He spoke to darkness and changed it. When you experience darkness, remember that God brings light to dark places and dark spaces. Call Him first and come out of your darkness. There is no situation that the proper amount of light cannot fix. Jesus said in the Book of John that He was the "light of the world". Therefore with Him there is no need to be in darkness, just call His name.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning, the first day. Genesis 1:3-5

Your Reason to Smile

We live in a world that seemingly floats in space. Each day we look at people with different color skin, different textures of hair, different tolerance for heat and cold, yet we were all made by the same God. We do not understand how all these things happened. Yet we thank God because he gave us hands. We thank God because he gave us feet. We think him because he gave us ears and eyes and a mouth. Then for some reason we go to sleep every night and we wake up the very next day. I’m not sure if we have considered just how amazing our lives are and they become even more amazing when we have children. Most of us only live for less than 100 years. By Biblical accounts others have lived for centuries. Our God is amazing. Our God is the reason we can wake up every day and have a smile on our faces because he’s so awesome. He does what He does for us for one reason because He loves us. Let today be the last day that you tell anyone or think to yourself that you don’t have a reason to smile. Amen.

Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you.
Isaiah 43: 4-5
