Holy Spirit Catholic Church

Holy Spirit Catholic Church Holy Spirit Catholic Church is a welcoming, vibrant parish community in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, we are living the Gospel as the Body of Christ. Father E.

Founded May 28, 1964. Holy Spirit Parish was established on May 28, 1964, with 250 families, from territory taken largely from the Cathedral of Christ the King Parish. Father John McDonough was the first Pastor, and he guided the fledgling Parish from his residence at the Cathedral. In October 1964, Father McDonough was named Rector of the Cathedral, and Father Joseph Ware was appointed Pastor of

Holy Spirit. He served until 1966, when Msgr. McDonough returned as Pastor. During this time a house on Lake Forest Drive was purchased as a rectory. Mass was celebrated first in the Pace Academy cafeteria, and later at D***s High School (now Sutton Middle School). The present property at the corner of Mt. Paran Road and Northside Drive, formerly a part of the old Fulton County stone quarry, was purchased in 1965. Two years later, in May 1967, the octagonal, multi purpose building was completed and served as Church, education center and offices. In 1971, the first rectory on the property was completed. In September 1972, Msgr. McDonough was re-assigned as Rector of the Cathedral, at which time Father Ware returned as Pastor to Holy Spirit. Peter Ludden (later Monsignor) was named Pastor in June 1975. During his tenure plans were undertaken for the construction of a separate Church and Education building. The Church was completed in March 1977, designed to seat 320 people; the Education building was completed in 1980. This phase of construction was financed, in part, by the sale of the multi-purpose building and 13 acres. At the time the Parish had 300 households. A Parish Hall was later added. Father Alan Dillmann was assigned as Pastor in June 1981 and served until June 1987, when Father Edward J. Dillon was named Pastor. By that time the Parish had grown to 550 households. A long-range planning study in 1988 settled on a number of priorities, which included the development of new physical facilities to meet the projected growth in the Parish. The original estimate was that the parish would be at 1,500 households by the year 2005. Since then the growth has exceeded estimates, and the Parish is currently at 1,984 households. The present Church was dedicated in July 1995. It seats 808 but additional seating can be added for special needs. The Goizueta Education Center houses education programs during the week and on Sundays. The Sims property was purchased in 1996, and the school property was purchased back in 1997, giving the parish a total property now is slightly more than 33 acres. The new rectory was completed in January 1998, at which time the old rectory was converted entirely to offices. In 2002 Holy Sprit parish sold 14 acres to Holy Spirit Prepartory School/Holy Spirit College for the purpose of building a high school. The building's completion in 2004 fulfilled a dream of Monsignor Dillon to build a Catholic school to serve children in preschool through 12th grade, with a total capacity of 925 students. In addition, Holy Spirit Prep is the home to Holy Spirit College, licensed by the State of Georgia, which offers accredited college level courses for 11th and 12th grade students. As our parish community continued to thrive after the construction of the church building, we saw an increased need for space for adult activities and a greater capacity for seating in St. Mary’s Chapel. In 2007 Msgr. Dillon worked closely with the Parish Council, Building Committee and the architects to take advantage of zoning approvals Holy Spirit obtained when we built the Church in 1995. We launched a multi-year Capital Campaign to fund a construction project to meet the needs of our growing parish for the foreseeable future. The project began with the demolition of several existing buildings which were both structurally unsound and insufficient for our parish needs. These buildings included St. Mary’s Chapel, McDonough Hall and the “old religious education building.” The replacement building contains a beautiful new chapel with seating for 200, a parish hall roughly double the size of the “old McDonough Hall” and complete with stained glass windows, an expansion of the education center, including two state-of-the art adult education classrooms as well as a basement for storage. The construction timetable was tight with demolition occurring in January 2009 and the project being completed in February 2010. A temporary certificate of occupancy was granted so that the Christmas Eve overflow Masses could be held in the newly constructed McDonough Hall. Ministries began meeting regularly in the facility in March, and a blessing and dedication was held in April 2010.

One “yes” can change everything.

In 2024–25, 36 adults explored the Catholic faith through OCIA, and 29 were welcomed into the Church at Holy Spirit. Their journeys remind us that faith is not something we do alone—it’s something we live together.

Welcome to our Catholic faith and parish family.

Thank you Holy Spirit!

This Mother’s Day, you surrounded Jazz with love in the most beautiful way.

Because of your generosity, her home is a little brighter—shade blinds on her patio, flowers hanging in bloom, a wagon to make daily life easier, and a new maternity dress with gift cards for gas and groceries.

Our 3rd and 4th graders also shared their love by creating pictures for Iriyah and Xyla, and one generous parent turned those drawings into a keepsake quilt and made blankets for the family. What a beautiful gift of comfort and care.

But what meant the most?
Jazz shared that she has never felt so loved or cared for.

That’s you. That’s this community.
We are so grateful for each of you and the way you continue to show up for our Marillac Moms.

Mark your calendars! We’re partnering with Walking with Moms in Need for a baby shower for Jazz!

A Message from Fr. Ballman: upcoming Clergy Assignments at Holy Spirit

Dear Parishioners:

I would like to share with you two priest assignment announcements that were recently made by the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

Reverend Mr. Sean Michael Lee, upon his ordination to the priesthood, has been appointed parochial vicar of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. We look forward with great joy to welcoming soon-to-be Father Lee to our parish community this summer. His assignment at Holy Spirit begins on July 1, 2026. Please keep him in your prayers as he prepares for ordination and begins his priestly ministry.

At the same time, Father Joseph Nguyen, who has served our parish faithfully as parochial vicar, has been appointed parochial vicar of Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Church in Norcross. While we are excited for Father Joseph and this next chapter in his priestly ministry, we will certainly miss his enthusiasm, boundless energy, and generous spirit. Father Joseph has shared his gifts in so many areas of parish life — from his enthusiasm for our pro-life ministry, to visits with the homebound and hospitalized, to his joyful involvement with our youth group, and so much more. I am grateful for all he has contributed to our parish community.

We will have time in the coming weeks to celebrate Father Joseph and express our gratitude before he begins his new assignment.

Please join me in praying both for Father Joseph and for Deacon Sean Lee during this time of transition and new beginnings in ministry.

In Christ,
Fr. Ballman

Today, our clergy and staff gathered to celebrate a very special member of our parish family, Kate Allen, as she prepares to retire at the end of May.

We honored Kate with Mass and tea, giving thanks for her many years of faithful service to Holy Spirit Catholic Church. From welcoming new parishioners with warmth and kindness to helping organize the Ministry Fair, Kate has been a true inspiration to so many in our community.

Please join us in praying for Kate and her husband, Bruce, as they begin this new chapter in life. May God continue to bless them abundantly.

Thank you Kate from all of us at Holy Spirit.

So much beauty. So much heart.

We’re so grateful for the Lucy Guild — the women who lovingly prepare the flowers that make our Church feel alive each week and radiant at Christmas and Easter.

Your creativity and care help set the tone for worship in ways words can’t.

And there’s room for more hands.

Volunteers serve in teams of two about once every two months — prepping flowers on Thursdays and arranging on Fridays.

If you’d love to help create beauty for God’s house, we’d love to welcome you.

Come join us.

Today we honor all mothers whose love and faith inspire us daily. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Holy Spirit.
————————————————————————
Mary, Most Holy Mother, you know the joys and sorrows of motherhood, for you carried the Son of God in your womb and stood at the foot of His Cross. Intercede today for all mothers everywhere — for those full of joy and those heavy with sorrow, for those holding new life and those grieving loss, for those whose faith is strong and those whose faith is faint. Ask your Divine Son to pour out His grace upon them all, that they may find in their vocation a path to holiness and a foretaste of Heaven.
Amen.
