“Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: Yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.” Psalm‬ ‭43‬:‭4‬ ‭KJV‬‬. As the psalmist prays for God to lead him, he lets us see into his heart in regard to his attitude towards God. He says that God is his ‘exceeding joy’. This was what made his relationship with God so real and so wonderful. To him, the greatest joy of life was to know God and be able to experience God in a personal way. The good news for us is: God is still the same today! He still desires to be the exceeding joy of our lives just as then. And the more that we open our hearts to Him, the more personal time we spend with Him, the more we will experience the reality of this great joy in God. Most of religion today has settled for a form of religion that pacifies their conscience but leaves them still running after the world, where their real joy is. But may we, as true children of God, find in Jesus Christ our heart’s dearest treasure! And may our lives show to others that nothing in this world compares to the exceeding joy we find in our God. This is an important part of the testimony our lives can offer to souls bound by sin and false religion. By God’s grace, let us choose to make Him our exceeding joy.

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; For I shall yet praise Him, Who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭11‬ ‭KJV‬‬. There are times in every Christian life when we battle discouragement like the psalmist describes here. Our emotions betray us and we feel ‘cast down’ in our spirit. But in these times it is good to ask ourselves this question, “Why am I cast down or feeling discouraged?” A couple verses earlier, the writer asked two questions which helps us to identify the source of discouragement. “I will say unto God my rock, why hast Thou forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” Many times the enemy of our soul will try to use lies to bring oppression on our minds. He will tell us that God has forgotten us or won’t forgive us. And of course, to dwell on those lies will disturb our peace and lead us into discouragement. In these times it is very important for us to lift our eyes unto Jesus and focus on the truths He has made clear to us. Take time to meditate on the truths of God’s love, His goodness and His amazing grace to us. As we embrace these truths it will drive away the oppression. And thank God, the truth will set us free!

“…My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth…” Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭KJV‬‬. One of the signs of true fatherly love is the willingness to correct and chasten when a child does wrong. Today, parenting has become so corrupted by liberal ideology that people think they should never correct or discipline their children. But according to God’s Word, that is evidence of a lack of true love. Because God is a perfect Father and loves with a perfect love, He always corrects and disciplines His children as needed. But the question for us is, “Are we humble enough to receive His loving correction in the right way?” When God speaks to us personally through a sermon, do we get upset at the preacher or do we thank God that He cares enough to deal with our need? Or when God uses a fellow Christian to offer words of correction to us, do we receive it as from the Lord or do we get offended? There has never been a more difficult time for spiritual leadership to bring divine correction to God’s people. Most church people today have the same prideful attitude as this world when it comes to receiving correction. But Proverbs 12:1 reminds us, “…he who hates correction is stupid.” May God help us to realize, it is because our Heavenly Father loves us that He uses His messengers to speak the words of correction we need to hear. By His grace, let us be humble enough to receive them.

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God…” Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭KJV‬‬. The psalmist is expressing what should be the heart desire of every real child of God. This is always the result for those hungering souls who “taste and see that the Lord is good”. But, if there is one thing this religious generation lacks, it is this intense desire for God Himself. Today, most church people desire many other things. They desire comfort and ease. They desire to be entertained and have their ears tickled. They desire to be more like the world than they do like Jesus. Sadly, many desire to have a hope of Heaven even while they continue in their sins. But thank God, real salvation brings a profound change in our desires! How can a soul that has tasted of God’s love and goodness still be longing for the fleeting pleasures of this world? How can we drink of that Fountain of Living Water and then be satisfied with the empty pools of this world? Let us praise God with the song writer, “There is a Fountain for the thirsty soul”. May God help us to nurture this holy desire which He has placed within our souls, until He becomes our hearts greatest longing.

“Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, Upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.” Psalm‬ ‭33‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭KJV‬‬. What a great blessing it is to know our Heavenly Father is watching over all those who reverence and hope in Him. But for this truth to become a blessing to us personally we first have to get past our human tendency, which is, to think that God’s eye is upon us to point out all of our flaws. Many believers think that He is watching us merely to critique our every word and deed. And this misunderstanding of God’s nature causes us to live under a spiritual cloud. But what a difference it makes when we understand God’s eye is upon His children for good! Every moment of our lives He is watching us so that we do not get ourselves in spiritual danger. What a powerful truth this is: ‘His eye is upon us to deliver us from spiritual death and to keep us alive’. Too often we imagine that we can look out for ourselves. We sometimes think we have learned enough or become sufficiently mature so that we can keep ourselves out of trouble. But the reality is, we need our Heavenly Father to watch over us every moment. We face a spiritual enemy who knows more than any of us. And he is so deceitful he has brought down the wisest of men. Let us be thankful, that the watchful eye of our Heavenly Father is always looking out for us. He is the only one who can deliver us from the deceitfulness of sin.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” Psalm‬ ‭32‬:‭8‬ ‭KJV‬‬. For many Christians, when they think of God’s all seeing eye watching them, it brings fear. They realize He sees every imperfection they have. But let us also realize, as God expresses here through the psalmist, that His eye is upon His children for our good. In fact, it is a tremendous blessing for us that God is willing to guide us with His eye. When we try to navigate through this world on our own, we are limited by what we can see. Our eyes can only perceive what is in front of us. We can’t see past obstacles or around corners. We aren’t able to see the enemies crouching along our pathway. We certainly can’t see the future and what tomorrow holds. But what a blessing to know that the eye of our Heavenly Father sees all! As we allow Him to guide us we can walk in confidence, because there is nothing which He cannot see. He sees every pot hole in the road as well as around every obstacle and corner. He is aware of every enemy in our pathway. And because He is omniscient, He sees the future which lies before us. He sees every valley we will walk through as well as His purpose in allowing us to pass through them. He sees the glory before us as we keep pressing to the goal. Nothing will ever take Him by surprise. By God’s grace, let us trust Him to lead and guide us, because He sees everything.

“…let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭KJV‬‬. As we become aware of God’s eyes upon us, watching our lives, we try to live as we should. The writer calls this ‘running the race set before us’. But soon we find out how weak we are. We soon discover, in ourselves we do not have what it takes to run this race with perseverance and stedfast endurance. And so, we are encouraged to always ‘look to Jesus’. When we try to run in our own strength, we fail time after time. But when we learn to look to Jesus for every day, for every moment, even for every step we take, then we begin to discover that He is the only One Who can help us as we need. The songwriter says, “O soul are you weary and troubled, No light in the darkness you see. There’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free. Turn your eyes upon Jesus…” If we only could understand how desperately we need to look to Jesus! God help us that the eyes of our soul will be continually upon Him. Truly there is “light and life for a look at the Saviour!” By God’s grace, let us always look to Jesus and then we will be able to run this race with stedfast endurance and finish victoriously.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬ ‭KJV‬‬. Most people tend to act a little different when they know they are being watched. From supervisors at work, to school monitors, to cameras being placed almost everywhere, those in authority use this tendency to cause people to act better. But what a difference it would make if we knew this great cloud of witnesses, these heroes of the faith, were actually observing our lives here in this world? And even more, what if we truly believed that our God is watching us all the time? Certainly then, we would be laying aside those things that hinder us spiritually. Then we would be getting rid of that besetting sin that seems always to find its way in. But the reality is, every soul is under the All Seeing eyes of God! And He doesn’t miss anything. He sees not only the action, but also the motive behind the action. May this truth settle upon our minds so that we live always conscious of God’s watchful eye upon us. As the song says, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me”.
