As we draw closer to Pentecost, it's important to plan for the Apostles Fast. Beginning at Sundown on May 31st (Sunday of All Saints) the Melkite Church begins the Apostles Fast in preparation for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29). During this time period, we abstain from meat, meat products and all dairy products. Fish, shellfish, vegetables, fruit, and olive oil are allowed. This fast ends June 28th.
There are two important points to remember when it comes to fasting:
1) The fasting guidelines are an ideal for which we strive, according to our ability and circumstances, and
2) It does us no good spiritually to keep the fast if we do not also seek to increase our effort to turn away from sin and towards the Lord.
