Community renewal took a stand at The Cathedral of St. Philip on May 31, as just over 100 confirmands representing 18 parishes across the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta celebrated their commitment and faith.

A diverse cross-section of the diocese’s 120 worshipping communities stepped up in the liturgy that capped months of intentional formation for those being confirmed, received, and reaffirmed. Their families, sponsors, and friends also showed up in their Sunday best to show support, and from them came an unexpected wave of spontaneous, personal rededication as they rose from the pews.

Their voices thunder, but only after their eyes see the gap between our prayers and our living. They are so in love with God and the people of God, these poets, that they tell the truth. Rarely do they address individuals, they speak to whole nations. Hosea confronted his nation marked by idolatry, political intrigue, social injustice and spiritual unfaithfulness. Using the metaphor of an unfaithful spouse, Hosea claimed that his nation was adulterous, abandoning the steadfast love of God. Hosea said, “God’s love is like the showers, like the spring rains that water the earth, but the people's love of God was like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early.” It is always in acknowledging the contrast between God and ourselves that repentance and reconciliation is possible for the listening heart.

Hosea 5:15-6:6

“To see the joy of a kid who feels better about themselves because they can now participate in class and contribute to the class community is part of what worship is all about,” said The Rev. Ben Wells, rector of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Macon, Georgia, an Appleton partner. “Worship is not confined, or shouldn’t be, to the church building. Our worship should lead to larger service and a new way of seeing God and neighbor, which is what spirituality is all about.”

Harry Tisdale grew up in New Orleans during the Great Depression. His mother, a music teacher, introduced him to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band musicians, who taught him to play almost every musical instrument.

During this era, Governor Huey Long loved the pageantry of the LSU band, expanding its size and the number of available scholarships. Because Tisdale’s family could not afford his college tuition, he secured a band scholarship and lived in a dormitory built underneath the football stadium. Music became Tisdale’s ticket out of poverty.
