Embry Hills United Methodist Church

Embry Hills United Methodist Church Today we continue lovingly and joyfully to offer Christ in an ever-changing and growing community. Welcome!

This is a community of faith where believers, seekers, and doubters of every age, race, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and political affiliation are valued as beloved children of God. Deeply rooted in the northeast Atlanta community, Embry Hills UMC was founded in 1961 when the neighborhood around the church was the frontier of the Atlanta suburbs. Grounded in

the Methodist spirit of a warm heart and helping hands, we are always ready to welcome new folks into our fellowship and are constantly seeking new avenues of service and care. Our hope is that the faces of our congregation will reflect the faces of our community and that all who encounter our church will find in us the gracious presence of Jesus Christ.

A New School Year at EHUMC Preschool

We’re a few short days away from the start of the 26-27 preschool year at Embry Hills UMC. As a mission of the church, the preschool is happily tasked with trying to gauge and meet the ever-changing needs of families in the Embry Hills community. This year, we are combining classes and expanding others while continuing our tried-and-true yoga, library, and chapel extracurriculars. It’s an exciting time to be part of our preschool family - whether you’re a teacher, our pastor, the librarian, a current or former student, parent, or grandparent. We are a special place and invite you to be part of it!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING SNAX SAX!

On Sunday, we had a great time after church playing/listening to music put on by our very own Altar Egos! Pete and Paul once again did a great job preparing food for our community as we gathered together to raise funds for our Snax Sax Ministry. Snax Sax works with elementary school guidance counselors in our area to help identify kids and families who are food insecure, and supplements their diet with food sent home with them in their backpacks on Friday afternoons.

This truly is a community-wide ministry as volunteers from our Scout Troops help unload the food, folks in the community, including many high school students, come volunteer, and then many of our preschool parents deliver the bags to the schools. It is very neat to see how it all works and how the community rallies around these kids and their families.

So far, the lunch and concert have raised over $1800 at the door, and we are still counting donations that are coming in online. If you would still like to donate to this ministry, you can do so by using the link below and selecting Snax Sax in the drop-down box, and we can continue to feed our community together.

Embry Hills is always seeking ways to respond to our community, and I am so thankful to be a part of such a loving church.

Peace,

Pastor Jordan

All about Confirmation!

Youth Confirmation:
Beginning on September 13th, we will begin confirmation classes during the Sunday school hour. Confirmation is a rite of passage in the Christian faith. Youth work together to learn more about the Christian faith, the United Methodist denomination, and their local church as they consider their willingness and readiness to “confirm” the baptismal promises made for them as infants and children. Youth who decide to be confirmed at the end of the class schedule are then full professing members of Embry Hills UMC. Classes will be 9:30am-10:30am on Sunday mornings in the youth room. Learn more and sign up at https://bit.ly/3SDnGP4

Adult Confirmation:
Beginning September 13th, Rev. Dr. Jordan Thrasher will be leading an adult confirmation class during the Sunday school hour in Room 401. Whether new to the church or a long-time member, this will be an incredible opportunity for anyone to explore their faith more deeply in community and learn about United Methodist history, membership, polity, and doctrine.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES: FAITH FORMATION

Back to School Sunday was a beautiful reminder of why children’s ministries is a multi-generational ministry approach. We gathered, blessed our children for the year ahead, shared a meal, and made space for joy, creativity, and connection. Seeing our community of grownups, children and youth together was a gift.

But our work in Children’s Ministries goes beyond special Sundays. We’re creating spaces where children know they belong, learn to recognize God’s presence, and discover that their voices, questions, and creativity matter.

Each week, we’re helping children discover that faith is something they can practice and explore during Sunday School on Sundays at 9:45 am. This month we taught the Littles, preschool through 2nd grade, how to pray, using playdough and repetition. In Club 345, we explored the timeline and eras of the Bible, asking big questions about God, how people were a part of God’s story. And we’re just getting started.

Starting this fall, Embry Hills will participate in the Sacred Arts Collective. We are inviting our families to explore creative expressions of worship including visual arts, music, puppetry and dance. This program helps children discover that their voices and imaginations have a place in worship and in the life of the church.

We would love for your family to participate, and there is an orientation coming up at Emory University on September 12, 2026 from 10:00am - 12:30pm. Please let Shanelle know by emailing [email protected] if you will attend and more information will be provided.

We’re grateful for every child who walks through our doors, every family who trusts us with their children, and every volunteer who helps create these sacred spaces. There is so much more ahead, and we’re excited to grow together.

A Message from Pastor Jordan

This upcoming Sunday I am going to start a new sermon series called “Unfinished,” where we are going to explore who we are as a people of faith, and as a church. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that we are complete, when there is so much more God is calling us to and toward. I hope this will be a meaningful season for you in the church as we all discover where we are, and who we could be in this moment in which God is calling each of us.

Partnering with this sermon series, there are going to be a series of journal prompts that will come to folks a couple of times a week to reflect on that week’s sermon and engage with the community in a new way. I have found journaling, and particularly journal prompts, to be wonderful avenues of self-discovery as I challenge myself by answering questions I would not have explored otherwise. If you would like to sign up and receive those prompts, email Christa in the church office with your email address, and she will add you to the list. I hope folks will also pass those along to friends and others in your small groups throughout our lives.

I am learning more and more about how it takes an entire community to effect change in our world. I think of the metaphor of pulling on a rope. While an incredibly strong person can pull a rope and be effective, it is going to last much longer and be more sustainable if an entire group pulls together. I am hopeful that our community can draw closer to one another and pull together to lift our neighbors. I am hopeful we can find ways to celebrate one another, be there for one another, and even rescue one another. As we explore our faith and our community as being unfinished, I am praying for God’s imagination of what our next step of faith might be, and how we can help usher heaven into Embry Hills.

Peace,

Pastor Jordan
