Embry Hills United Methodist Church

Embry Hills United Methodist Church Today we continue lovingly and joyfully to offer Christ in an ever-changing and growing community. Welcome!

This is a community of faith where believers, seekers, and doubters of every age, race, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and political affiliation are valued as beloved children of God. Deeply rooted in the northeast Atlanta community, Embry Hills UMC was founded in 1961 when the neighborhood around the church was the frontier of the Atlanta suburbs. Grounded in

the Methodist spirit of a warm heart and helping hands, we are always ready to welcome new folks into our fellowship and are constantly seeking new avenues of service and care. Our hope is that the faces of our congregation will reflect the faces of our community and that all who encounter our church will find in us the gracious presence of Jesus Christ.

JORDAN'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

I’ve really enjoyed having our combined Sunday School classes over the past five Sundays. We wrapped this experience up this past week with some great things to think about. Our main question going into these sessions was, “How do we faithfully participate in the ministries of Embry Hills United Methodist Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness *within the current religious landscape in our community*?” It’s a hefty question, and one I think about just about every day as we seek to be stewards of the resources God has entrusted us with and offer hope for what God is currently doing in our world.

It was a fascinating intergenerational conversation. We realized that we do not all know what each other’s lived experiences have been or currently are. Sometimes we assume a lot of what people are thinking based on the news we hear or our own personal experience, but by asking questions of one another, we are able to move outside of our own experience and see from a different perspective. To put it another way, what we thought was true for others because of what was true for us might not be what is currently going on.

This is one of the reasons why our sermons on Sunday are going to be around the Holy Spirit, and particularly the image of “Living Water.” When I was learning how to backpack and camp, there were several ways to access water. First, you can carry it yourself. This is the safest option. But you can also carry a water filter with you to refill along the way. When using water filters, the best water to find is “living water,” or water that is moving. Stagnant water can become a place of disease, but if the water is moving, it doesn’t give disease the conditions it needs to set in. Jesus promised us living water in the Gospel of John, and we are in a time when moving water is all around us. I believe that through the Holy Spirit, we might enter into this stream of what God is doing in us and through us.

Peace,

Pastor Jordan

Jordan’s Weekly Message

In parent circles, we are in the midst of what is known as “May-hem.” All of the concerts, performances, testing, class parties, and strange schedules all combine during this month. It is during this month that my family syncs its calendars on Sunday, getting ready for the week, checks our schedule for the day in the morning, and adjusts throughout. All of these routine schedules can make it difficult to plan things.

However, a few weeks ago, I signed up to go on a silent retreat today. It is at the Ignatius House, which is located in the Sandy Springs area, and is a wonderful retreat center. However, in the midst of chaos, it feels strange to go on a silent retreat. There are other things going on that need my attention! There are things I need to write, organize, and people to see! There are delayed projects and grading of classes to do!

I was talking to Christa, our (fantastic) administrative assistant, about this feeling. Maybe I shouldn’t go because of all of the things I just mentioned. She has the ability to see my calendar and know what the schedule looks like, and she said, “Isn’t all of this exactly why you SHOULD go?”

Of course, she is right. It is exciting to be busy, as it is exciting that our church is busy. Earth Sunday! RMN Sunday! Youth Sunday! Mother’s Day! But activities should not take the place of relationship and prayer. May-hem can cause that, and I hope everyone can have the opportunity to slow down, breathe, and spend time with Jesus.

Peace,

Pastor Jordan
