Get to Know the Children's Ministry at Embry Hills UMC

At Embry Hills, we help children’s faith grow through stories, creativity, and imagination. Our Children’s Ministries create spaces where kids and families experience God’s love in fun and meaningful ways. We believe faith grows not only in classrooms and worship, but also around tables, through art, in laughter, and in moments of belonging and joy.

As summer begins, your involvement helps create a faith community where every child is seen, known, and celebrated as a beloved disciple of Jesus. Together we’re building a church that welcomes wonder, values creativity, and makes sure every child knows they belong.

Everyone can find a place in Children’s Ministries.
Here are some ways your family can get involved and connect.
This Sunday, June 21, enjoy a free donut and coffee before worship, then join us for an Explorer-themed service. Kids will receive explorer hats, safari vests, and goodie bags as we start a week of adventure, discovery, and faith-filled fun.

Every child should know this simple truth: you are loved, you belong, and you’re part of God’s story. Here are some ways to join in and invite others. Who will you bring along?

Worship
Children are welcome at the 11:00 am service on Sundays at Embry Hills. Kids can stop by the kids’ corner in the Narthex to pick up activities for worship, like prayers, books, string activities, and coloring sheets. During Time on the Steps, children can join a short conversation about the scripture and the day’s theme.

Back to School Sunday
Save the date for Back to School Sunday on August 2nd. Bring your child’s backpack to worship for a special Blessing of the Backpacks as the new school year starts. Afterward, join us in the Family Life Center for pizza, crafts, and more fun together.

Sacred Arts Collective
Want to get involved beyond Sunday mornings? We’re joining a new program called the Sacred Arts Collective. This is a special opportunity for a few families to explore faith through creative activities like puppetry, storytelling, visual arts, music, and dance.

Families who sign up will take part in four Saturday workshops:
October 24, 2026
December 5, 2026
January 30, 2027
March 13, 2027

In the Sacred Arts Collective, kids will learn that their questions, gifts, and imaginations are welcome in God’s story. They will also have a chance to help lead worship.

A Pastoral Message from Shanelle Alli

This Sunday, we’ll gather to explore Psalm 8 in worship. A sacred text that opens with awe and invites us to see the world and one another through fresh eyes.

The psalmist begins by looking up, taking in the vastness of creation, feeling both small and deeply connected to something greater.

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars…

Have you had moments of amazement at God, like moments in nature and staring at the sky, that invite us to pause and look within?

Encountering God’s creation reminds us of our God whose imagination surpasses our wildest dreams, and prompts us to wonder what it means to belong to such a creative and loving presence.

This week, we’ll reflect on how Psalm 8 weaves together these two truths: the grandeur of creation and God’s intimate, personal care for each of us.

Join us for our “Sunday Explorers” theme, a worship experience designed to help all of us enter Psalm 8 with curiosity, imagination, and joy. Come early for coffee, donuts, and connection. Kids will prepare to explore, and there will be safari hats and vests for children, a simple reminder that discovering God’s wonder is for all ages.

But this time of exploring isn’t just for kids. It’s for everyone.

One of the main messages of Psalm 8 is that faith grows in community. We don’t come to know God by ourselves. We are shaped by those around us, from all ages and backgrounds.

We would love your participation whether you are young or young at heart. This Sunday, adults can join in meaningful ways. Some will help bring the story to life by holding animal puppets during worship. Others will sing, filling the sanctuary with praise. You can also simply be present, making space for conversation, connection, and belonging before and after worship.

These may seem like small things, but they are part of something bigger.

All of these actions help us remember the heart of Psalm 8: the God who holds the stars also holds each one of us close and calls us to hold one another with care.

The church, then, becomes more than a place we visit. It becomes a living, breathing community, one where faith is not just spoken, but practiced, shared, and experienced together.

This Sunday, as we look up in wonder and look around at each other, we’ll remember that faith grows in every moment of worship through songs, laughter, simple acts of care, and just being together.

So come ready to explore and discover the God who is mindful of us all.

This month at Embry Hills UMC, Cassie Ruiz, Shanelle Alli, and Kate Underwood are preaching a series called "Sacred Stories" focusing on the Psalms. Join us in person or online to hear about the stories from our community that reveal the nature and presence of God in lives.

The book of Psalms is a collection of ancient Hebrew hymns and prayers that model for us ways that we can pray, worship, lament, and express our every emotion to God. This collection of poetry reminds and inspires us to bring our praises, complaints, gratitude, wonder, lament, questions, grief, anger, joy, despair, and everything else to God.

Art and poetry are excellent tools for processing our emotions and experiences through worship and prayer. This is an ancient yet timeless practice that we can all learn to embrace more deeply.

We hope that you will join us on our journey with the Psalms.

JORDAN'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

The World Cup is starting this week, and I have mixed feelings about it. The last time the United States hosted the World Cup was 1994. Going to a World Cup game was a seminal moment in my life. It was the first time I ever rode on a plane. I have never asked, but I imagine the cost for my dad to take his soccer-obsessed son to a World Cup game in Orlando, FL, plus flights and food, had to be a tremendous sacrifice. We saw the Netherlands win over Ireland in the first knockout round, and Dennis Bergkamp became one of my favorite players of all time. It’s the reason I became an Arsenal fan after that 4th of July match (who just won the Premier League, BTW). The World Cup was also happening the year Meredith and I were married 20 years ago. In that one, another Arsenal player, Mesuit Ozil, was starring for Germany, and they became my squad that year. We were on our honeymoon, and the resort set aside a theatre room to show the matches. Meredith and I were the only ones in there, along with the staff, and it is one of my favorite memories cheering for Germany with the St. Lucian staff being the only resort guests in the room.

With all of these memories, I was excited the US was going to co-host a World Cup, and even more excited when Atlanta became a host city! But then, the words “dynamic pricing model” and “ticket lottery” began to be thrown around. Host cities all around the country began grabbing for money by exhorbitantly overcharging people who would come to their city, and a war in the Middle East changed the dynamics about which teams might not even be allowed to come play. “Hosting” became the term for a blatant money grab, and even if I wanted to try and recreate that magic with my own children that my dad gave me 32 years ago, I can’t afford it even when the game will be in my own city. It makes me so sad that a beautiful and wonderful thing, a global soccer tournament with the world’s best players, bringing people of all kinds together, has devolved into even further stratification and greed. What a wasted opportunity.

Embry Hills gets so many opportunities to “host” our neighbors. It isn’t on the grand scale of a World Cup, but I think that if we can change our mindset to give it the same importance for every person that comes, it could be world-changing. God gives us these opportunities in Vacation Bible School and Youth, in Older adults and scouts, and in choir and recovery groups. We host film crews, Girl Scout troops, preschool families, Camp Buzz, Epic Gospel Choir, and of course OC3. All of these are an opportunity to host, to extend the hospitality of Christ, and invite them to the table. Let’s not miss our opportunities, taking something that is beautiful and seeking our own gain. Let’s be generous to let the beauty of community and hospitality shine through.

Every day, patients depend on the generosity of blood donors for surgeries, cancer treatments, accident recovery, and life-saving care. This is a simple way to make a profound difference in someone’s life.
