Open Circle Community Church (formerly known as Northeast Baptist Church) is
an inclusive, community of people seeking to follow the Way of Jesus together. But it is our
heartfelt desire and intention to express and share Love with others, the kind of
Love we believe God has for the world. As our name implies, we are welcoming of all, regardless of personal
characteristics of race, background, soc

ioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. Though historically Baptist, we are essentially a gathering of Jesus followers, for
whom denominational identity is of lesser importance than our commitment to
live according to the teachings of Jesus. We believe that many barriers have been
erected that keep people apart unnecessarily. It is our hope that we can be part
of a movement to remove those barriers. We seek to follow Jesus’ teachings by gathering each Sunday for worship and
regularly at various times during the week for fellowship, teaching, and service. We would be delighted if you chose to worship with us.

"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Luke 16:10
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18

Dear friends,

Today you get a "two-fer" of scripture references. :)

The verses above, the first spoken by Jesus, and the second by the writer of First John, emphasize the importance of integrity and honesty, not so much with words, but with actions. There's an expression, "Words are cheap." To be sure, this expression is a bit of an exaggeration because words can and do have great and important meaning. But the point is, of course, that our actions must be consistent with our words, otherwise the words have little or no value. Once we lose a reputation for honest and integrity, it's hard to get it back. And as the verse spoken by Jesus says, it starts with how we do with the so-called "small things."

We live in an age where we witness a great deal of dishonesty, sometimes from people in positions of authority. This can be very disheartening to witness. Let us seek, with the help of the Spirit, to be people whose words and actions can be trusted. We can't control what other people do. We are only responsible for our own actions. And when we fall short (and we will) it's important to admit it, ask forgiveness, and carry on with the goal of doing better next time.

Grace & Peace!

"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established, what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than the angels, and crowned them with glory and honor." Psalm 8:3-5

Dear friends,

The verses above plainly state that God specifically created human beings (that's us!) "a little lower than the angels" and that we have have been crowned with "glory and honor." Wow. I don't know about you, but that shakes me up a bit when I think about how imperfect I am. But it does make me want to try to do a little bit better today. Better in how I treat people. Better in how I do my job. Better in how I express love. Better in how I think of myself. Better in how I practice gratitude for the goodness and faithfulness of a loving God.

Imagine a world where we more consistently lived in the awareness of this understanding. May it be so.

Grace & Peace

"I am my beloved's, and his desire is for me." Song of Solomon 7:10.

Dear friends,

The verse above is from the Old Testament book of the Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs. It's a poetic book that essentially celebrates the love between two people, often in language that is intimate and descriptive. Some people are uncomfortable with the presence of this book in the Bible and many have struggled to understand why it is there. Let's be honest. Some are embarrassed by it.

But the fact that the Song of Solomon is in the Bible reminds us that love, including physical love, is one of God's wonderful gifts to us. After all, God thought it up and God created it!

We can also understand the Song of Solomon as a metaphor, a picture of the love between God and humanity. Here's good news: God loves us not because of anything we have done to make God love us. God just loves us. As lovers of God, we can strive to love in the same way, with the help of God's Spirit. We love because we love. Like God does.

Grace & Peace!

"Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or a sister is a liar. For whoever is does not love their brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen." 1 John 4:20

Dear friends,
The verse above makes it as clear as it can possibly be. If we say we are lovers of God, but don't practice loving our fellow our human beings, then we are not telling the truth.

If we fail to love someone because of their beliefs, opinions, nationality, religious affiliation, race, gender, political philosophy, appearance, language, or any other outward factor, then we contradicting ourselves when we say love God.

Sometimes I just love how plainly scripture speaks truth.

Grace & Peace!
