With the passing of Lucille Gunter, i’ve been thinking a lot about the church and people. Sure miss those people.

This photo is from the wedding at Bethel Temple of Brenda Ann Gunter and Donald George. My dad performed the ceremony and I played the organ.

Saw on Fb that Krispy Keeme will start delivering donuts and I commented about our church fundraisers when we went door to door taking orders and then later delivering. Anybody remember if a dozen was 60 cents. That price is in my head.

I can only speak for myself, but i am so glad i did not grow ip in a “mega-church!” Our small congregation was close-we knew everyone and their families. It made childhood so special, esp the holidays, covered dish dinners, weddings, baptisms, dedications of babies, etc. the funerals were sad, but that was to be expected.

Services were not focused on prosperity, but on service to others. It was a very different time!

If i remember correctly, her name was Blanche Appleby. She was a missionary to The Philippines when WWII broke out there. She was imprisoned in a Japanese camp. I dont remember for how long.

After the war and her release, she visited churches to tell of her experiences during her imprisonment.

About the same time she visited Bethel Temple, someone came with a movie about the treatment of Jews by the N***s in camps like Auschwitz.

Emaciated people were shown. They had suffered terribly. I think this is one reason i so dislike the remarks of Ocasio-Cortez, a Socialist, comparing the caravan of people from Central America as equal to the N**i treatment of Jews. I have yet to see anyone in the caravan looking emaciated.

I vaguely remember the missionary’s visit or movie because i was quite young. It was before i was 10 and maybe years before that. I was born in 1946, which was after the war ended.

The German people were pushed into such hatred of Jews just as the caravan people have been pushed into such jealousy of Americans. It is human nature to target someone or a group of people, but isn’t the goal of Life and one’s Journey to lift ourselves above the petty targeting?

If anyone remembers more about the missionary and the movie, or if you just have something to say, please comment.

I had asked the AG (Assembly of God) Council in Springfield, Mo for info and today received some info and i did reply that the Bethel Temple groundbreaking was in 1950 (video on Youtube at channel LeeGaborTexas) so info that Grover Langston pastored only from 1961 is incorrect.

Rev Snider had informed me over a year ago about the name change to Family Life.

Also, i know bonds were sold to remodel the church on Boulevard and i always have wondered if bond investors were paid back. I hope so!

As most know, it bothered me that this Scott’s (no info on their bring an incorporated church with the GA Sec of State office) had held the church property on blvd as non-profit with no prop taxes and had done nothing with it to deserve non-tax designation so i contacted the Fulton County Tax Assessor. They investigated and the land is now taxed. I remember how people sacrificed for Bethel Temple to exist. No $ amt of sale to Scott’s was sent and nothing on cost of Lithonia property.

In addition to list of Rev Langston’s credentials and 50-year honor by AG as ordained in the AG, Here is what was sent by the AG:

Bethel Temple, 380 Boulevard SE, Atlanta GA
Pastors: Grover Langston 1961 – 1969
Carl Mauldin 1970 -1973
Leonard J. Bryson 1974 – 1978
Eldon G. Ford 1979 – 1984
Steve Snider 1985 – 1998
Troy Shaw 1999 -2000
Donald Saglimbene 2001 -2007

August 1982 Bethel Temple under the leadership of Pastor Eldon Ford purchased property in Lithonia, GA and relocated the church to that property. At that same time they sold the property on Boulevard to the Scott’s Crossing Church and received payments from them over the next several years. The name of the church was changed to Family Life Assembly of God in 1986 and then changed again in 2000 to Celebration Church. The church attendance and financial support began to decrease and the church was closed in 2007. The property was eventually sold and the monies put into the district’s church planting program for future churches.

The bond program would have been done by the church internally and we have no records of that.

Just added info and posted but not showing up. Will skip all my comments from that post and just add what AG sent:

Was going to make sure the free ebook “Memories of Bethel Temple” was updated to include Mae Clark as a member, the name of the camp meeting site, and could be downloaded correctly, BUT laptop puter still having its little hissy fits, so gave up and shut it down. At least it booted today after days of it not coming on.

Frustrating! Oh well, one of these days things will work well enough for me to get tasks done.

Even worse is i am out of chocolate and not going to the store until Tuesday and today is Saturday. At least i have plenty of pop and making potato salad Sunday (boiled eggs today), so i will survive!

Just need to find my front page and final draft programs and add them to the non-profits laptop.

Will never buy HPs again. Are there any truly reliable computers anymore?
