*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN.* THE DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2020
*THEME:* THE VOICE OF THE LORD

*BIBLE READING:* PSALM 29 *(NIV)*

1. [A psalm of David.] Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to his name; worship the LORD in the splendour of his holiness.
3. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
4. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.
5. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox.
7. The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning.
8. The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9. The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10. The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King for ever.
11. The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

*MESSAGE:*
In Psalms, we see the power of God in diverse ways. From our text, we see that this divine power is usually manifest through a definite means: The voice of the Lord. In 5 verses (vs. 4, 5, 7, 8 & 9), there are many dimensions of the work of the voice of the Lord: It is powerful, it is full of majesty, it breaks cedars, it divides the flames of fire, it shakes the wilderness, it makes animals to reproduce, it clears the forests, etc.

There is no limit to what the voice of the Lord can do in any given situation- it can perform any miracle. How do you engage the power of the word of God? You must “…worship Him in the beauty of holiness” (v.2) and also believe Him according to His word to you. As you do that, you will discover that “…the voice of the Lord is powerful…and full of majesty” (v.4). As you face the day in faith and holiness, may the voice of the Lord go ahead of you today!

*PRAYER:*
Lord, let Your voice speak for me today.

*Daily Fountain Quote of the Day*

_“I have fought the good fight of faith, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”_ *(2 Timothy 4:7)*

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN.* THE DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2020
*THEME:* A KINSMAN-REDEEMER

*BIBLE READING:* RUTH 2: 13-23*(NIV)*

13. Then she said, "Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like one of your maidservants."
14. Now Boaz said to her at mealtime, "Come here, and eat of the bread, and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar." So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed parched [grain] to her; and she ate and was satisfied, and kept some back.
15. And when she rose up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, "Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her.
16. "Also let [grain] from the bundles fall purposely for her; leave [it] that she may glean, and do not rebuke her."
17. So she gleaned in the field until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
18. Then she took [it] up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. So she brought out and gave to her what she had kept back after she had been satisfied.
19. And her mother-in-law said to her, "Where have you gleaned today? And where did you work? Blessed be the one who took notice of you." So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, "The man's name with whom I worked today [is] Boaz."
20. Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed [be] he of the LORD, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!" And Naomi said to her, "This man [is] a relation of ours, one of our close relatives."
21. Ruth the Moabitess said, "He also said to me, 'You shall stay close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest.' "
22. And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "[It is] good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, and that people do not meet you in any other field."
23. So she stayed close by the young women of Boaz, to glean until the end of barley harvest and wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.

*MESSAGE:*
Ruth expressed deep appreciation for the unusual kindness and favours shown to her by Boaz (vs. 10, 13). Three additional favours are described in verses 14-16 and 21 namely, a meal invitation, special permission to pick up whole bundles of grain, and an extension of the “gleaning permit” to cover the entire harvest period! The processed grain from the first day’s gleanings amounted to about an ephah (some 22 litres), which could provide enough food for two people for several days (vs. 17-18)! As Ruth returned home, she learned that Boaz was actually a relative, a kinsman-redeemer who had been helping the family for a long time (v.20). His wealth notwithstanding, Boaz did not overlook the underprivileged, but took practical steps to help them (vs. 1, 21-22).

There could be someone around you that may need your help today and this help may not always be financial, but could be material, social or even spiritual. Try to identify genuine needs around you, and prayerfully take steps to meet some of them! Hebrews 2:14-18 shows us that Jesus is our brother who came to redeem us from sin and death. Have you identified with this Jesus, our kinsman-redeemer?

*PRAYER:*
Oh Lord, make me an instrument of blessing to someone today.

*Daily Fountain Quote of the Day*

_“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!”_ *(Psalm 27: 13-14)*

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN.* THE DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 2020
*THEME:* DIVINE FAVOUR

*BIBLE READING:* RUTH 2: 1-12 *(NIV)*

1. Now Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, from the clan of Elimelech, a man of standing, whose name was Boaz.
2. And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favour." Naomi said to her, "Go ahead, my daughter."
3. So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
4. Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, "The LORD be with you!" "The LORD bless you!" they called back.
5. Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, "Whose young woman is that?"
6. The foreman replied, "She is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi.
7. She said,`Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.' She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter."
8. So Boaz said to Ruth, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls.
9. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled."
10. At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, "Why have I found such favour in your eyes that you notice me--a foreigner?"
11. Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband--how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.
12. May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."

*MESSAGE:*
Gleaning among farmers implies going over the fields several times to maximise harvest recovery. But in Leviticus 19: 10 and 23: 22, God commanded His people to deliberately leave the gleanings for the poor and the alien. Naomi and Ruth made use of this opportunity. Ruth went out hoping to find a field belonging to someone who might show her favour (v.2), but she got a divine favour (v.10). Notice her initiative and wise steps, first to obtain support from her mother-in-law (v.2), and then the foreman’s permission (vs. 6-7). Her industry is also commendable (vs. 7,11). Today, many of our young person’s spend quality time watching movies, surfing the internet or just idling. What can be done to ignite the kind of initiative and industry we see in Ruth in our generation?

After Boaz had extended much favours to Ruth, he prayed that God would reward her (v.12). Do you think she would have activated these favours if she remained at home complaining, or went about begging? We can agree with James 2:17 that her faith in God was shown through her actions! Thus, as we pray for divine favours, let us take definite steps of faith, knowing that God will make us return with shouts of joy (v.12; Psalm 126:6).

*PRAYER:*
Oh Lord our God, as I engage in honest activities, please grant me divine favours today.

*Daily Fountain Quote of the Day*
