Breaking my (unintentional) social media silence to celebrate 18 years of life with this kid. His name, Matthew Isaac, means “God’s gift of laughter,” and he has truly lived up to this moniker in every way. From his first breath he has brought delight and wonder and deep love into this world. Max and I are so grateful to be his parents. And soon we will be sending him off into the world to attend Carleton College and explore the gifts God has given him. Happy birthday, Munchkin! 💕🐳💕

I know it’s Friday and we’re basically in weekend mode at this point, but I couldn’t wait to share the news about my new online Lenten study. We’re going to do a deep dive into doubt! Doesn’t that sound like a good time? 😜 In my book, We Are Beloved, I touched on doubt, particularly as it relates to our ability to accept God’s deep love for us. And in my spiritual direction practice I spend a lot of time talking with people about their doubts and questions, so I know it’s a very real issue. That’s why I’m excited to spend the six weeks of Lent holding space for doubt. We’ll explore the ways in which doubt is human and necessary, and how it can be transformative in our spiritual life. You can read more about it in the link in my bio. I hope you’ll join me!

Yesterday I got to deliver prayer beads and hang out with the Sunday School teachers of . They are going to be leading a study on my book, We Are Beloved, in their adult classes this Lent. In addition, I’m preaching the Ash Wednesday sermon, and leading a workshop for the youth. In other words, this whole church will be united in their journey of learning just how beloved they are. This is all thanks to the work of , who lives into her belovedness every day. I’m so grateful. What a great job I have.

I just got a new piece of artwork and wanted to show it off! It’s from the enormously talented and I love it so much! It’s such a gorgeous representation of The Beatles’ lyrics that speak to healing and resilience and hope. It’s already on my wall and makes me smile every time I see her.

This morning on my walk I passed by this construction site. I’m obsessed with architecture and design, so I tend to slow down and take in as many details as I can when I pass a new structure. I stood for several minutes and assessed this office building, paying particular attention to the recessed walls that create a cutout form in the shape of the building. It’s kind of cool. As I did, I realized one of the workers was looking down at me. With his sunglasses and from that height I wasn’t completely sure he was looking at me, so to test my theory I held up my hand in a subtle wave. And he waved back! And y’all, for some reason, that thrilled me. It was this tiny, momentary connection between two strangers. We both, in that moment, were offering a sign of greeting to the other. So completely ordinary. So completely wondrous. What wonders have you experienced today?

It was such a delight to have so many of you join me for the gathering earlier this week where I talked about the spiritual practice of receiving a word for the year. It’s clear from the turnout, your energy, and your questions that many of you want to engage in this practice. To help you learn how to use your word, I’m planning to post periodically about how my word “grounded” is helping me experience God’s presence in new ways. A good example: this morning in my reading I came across this quote by Wendell Berry: “And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the GROUND at our feet, and learn to be at home.” There’s my word. There’s my invitation to see God’s presence with me right where I am, in this very one inch of space where I sit, and feel at home - grounded - in God’s deep love. Where is your word showing up for you today?

Y’all know how much I love The Academy for Spiritual Formation. It was unquestionably the most profound, life-changing experience in my life; the place where I finally found peace after trauma and learned that I am deeply loved by God. I love it so much that I wrote a whole book about it. That’s why I’m thrilled to share this opportunity with you! While I completed the Two-Year , there is a Three-Day Academy coming in March that is both a) online and )super affordable! In fact there’s scholarship money available for anyone who needs it (really, please apply for it if that will help you out). The faculty for this Academy are fantastic: Dr. Jerry Webber and Dr. Elaine Heath. I’ll be there, and hope to see you.

If you meet with me for spiritual direction, just know that you are sitting with God, me, and this cutie. Gracie insists on lying next to me while I work. I’m not sure who is comforting who more, but I do know she makes the space we hold even more sacred.

Looking for a group or individual study for Lent? Consider this little book. Inspired by a quote from Richard Rohr of , this study begins with the baptism of Jesus, where he hears God call him beloved. From there, we journey with Jesus to learn what it means to live as God’s beloved: to express beloved wonder, listening, passion, healing, service, courage, doubt, and witness. Along the way, we realize we too are beloved, and are called to live into this truth. It’s a six-week study that can be done with or without prayer beads. Published by .
