Pastoral Meditation on the Transfiguration

“The scene below is the same, but everything has changed.”

(Matthew 17:1–9; Mark 9:2–10; Luke 9:28–36)

They had climbed the mountain with Jesus before. But this time was different. Peter, James, and John had no idea what they were walking into—just a quiet moment to pray, they assumed. But then, the light changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothing turned dazzling white. And suddenly—Moses. Elijah. A voice like thunder wrapped in a cloud of glory:
“*This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him.*”

There they stood on the mountain, caught between heaven and earth. What they saw did not erase the world they left below—but it changed how they saw it forever. The valley was still waiting, the sick still suffering, the opposition still scheming. But now they had seen something that altered their understanding of *everything.*

**The scene below was the same, but everything had changed.**

This is the gift and mystery of the Transfiguration. Jesus did not become something new on that mountain; He was *revealed* for who He had always been—God’s glory in human form. The disciples had walked with Him, eaten with Him, listened to His teachings, and marveled at His miracles. But they had not yet fully *seen* Him. And once they did, nothing else could ever look quite the same.

We too live in the valleys of life—suffering, confusion, injustice, uncertainty. But when we catch even a glimpse of Jesus in His glory, we are changed. And that changes how we live. Our circumstances may remain the same. But our vision of the One who walks with us has been transformed. We begin to see that God’s glory is not confined to mountaintops—it walks down with us into the crowd, the chaos, the pain. We don’t always get to build tents and stay in the shining moments. But we carry their *light* back down the mountain with us.

**“The scene below is the same, but everything has changed.”**

That’s what happens when we behold Christ. Not only on the mountain, but in our hearts. We learn to see Him as He truly is—and in that vision, we find strength to face the valleys with courage, purpose, and joy.

Picture Jesus Preaching to the Crowds.

Then, read the following passage very slowly, pausing to consider what He might be saying JUST TO YOU!!

A farmer went out to plant seeds. Some seed fell by the wayside and the birds of the air ate it.
Some seed fell on rocky ground and grew quickly because the soil was not deep. When the sun rose, it was scorched for lack of roots.
Some fell among thorns. The thorns grew and choked it and it did not yield grain.
Some fell upon good ground and brought forth abundant fruit that yielded thirty, sixty or a hundred fold. He who has ears, let him hear.
