With the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry occurring on Saturday across the street from the cemetery, we remember Vince Dooley today. Coach was a student athlete at Auburn playing football from 1951-1953. He also coached there from 1956-1963. Coach wisely accepted an offer to come to Athens as the Bulldog’s head coach following that time. From 1964-1988 he led the Dawgs to 6 SEC championships and one glorious national title in 1980.

Coach Dooley is laid to rest in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Many Georgia football lettermen are also buried here along with UGA presidents and distinguished members of the university community.

Oconee Hill Cemetery is open to the public most days (but not on UGA game days!). We hope you come visit. Lots are available as we are an active cemetery for the Athens community.

Sanford Stadium looms over the West Hill section of Oconee Hill Cemetery, a reminder of the long history between OCH and the University of Georgia. Started on campus in the mid-1800s as the official Athens City Cemetery, located near the residence of the University President, it soon outgrew the available space and was relocated to its current location. The relationship remains in the dozens of UGA Presidents, faculty, coaches, staff members, and Bulldog fans who are buried here.

We are pleased to offer event spaces for rent at Oconee Hill Cemetery, among them the Sexton's House. The Sexton's House was acquired by the trustees of Oconee Hill Cemetery in 1892 from the adjoining Athens Manufacturing Company. It served as the cemetery's sexton's residence for the next 90 years and was beautifully restored in 2007 by the Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery.
