Wednesday's Word for February 25, 2026

Nutritionists warn that skipping too many meals can interfere with our body’s appetite and cause us to develop strong food cravings, especially for sugar and carbohydrates. The same thing can happen spiritually. If we begin skipping our regular time of personal Bible study, we might lose our healthy appetite and begin feeding our mind with mental junk food.

It’s normal for a healthy soul to crave a few morsels from the book of Proverbs, which are simple and easy to digest. Other times we need a long, slow, hot meal from Ephesians or Ezekiel. Are you ever hungry for the Sermon on the Mount? Thirsty for the worship of the Psalms? Ravenous for Revelation?

The entire Bible – Genesis to Revelation – is a pantry for the soul. It’s God’s menu for our mind and heart, manna for every morning and bread for every night. When we hunger and thirst for Scripture, God richly feeds and sustains us with His nourishing Word.

Wednesday's Word for February 18, 2026

Charles Spurgeon once told of an old clergyman who said that a line of praise was even better than a page of prayer – that “praise was the highest, noblest, best, most satisfying, and most healthful occupation in which a Christian man could be found.” If that’s true, how can we praise the Lord as we go through the day?

When we look out our morning windows, we should pause to take in the sky, looking for rays of sunshine, whisps of clouds, drops of rain – each and every one crafted from the artistry of the Almighty. When we have our breakfast and eat our meals, we should pause to thank God for His generous nature, for He provides us with everything to enjoy. As we drive to work or take up the housecleaning, we should sing a song of praise, even if it’s simply in our mind. As dusk and darkness fall over the landscape, we should remember God’s faithfulness.

Praising our Savior strengthens our faith, steadies our nerves, and minimizes our troubles.

Wednesday's Word for February 11, 2026

No resource was more valued in biblical lands than pure water. Cities grew up around water supplies, like Jerusalem based on the ever-flowing waters of the Gihon Spring (which still flows today). It is no wonder the biblical writers used a spring or well as a symbol of life. Solomon, in Proverbs 16:22, called the heart a “wellspring of life”. Thus, the heart was to be kept pure and righteous; the health of the life depended on the health of the heart.

So, when David wrote that God would give “the desires of your heart” to the one who delights in God, he had in mind a pure heart. Such a heart would be consistent with one who delights in God and Hid ways. It’s the equivalent of Jesus telling His disciples to abide in Him and His words in order to be given whatever they asked for. Getting our prayers answered, or the desires of our heart, presupposes a heart that delights in God.

God wants to delight in meeting the needs of His children, in satisfying them with every good thing.
