Edwards Chapel Baptist Church

Edwards Chapel Baptist Church Mission ECBC was organized August 19, 1899 with seven members adopting the name of Mallison mill Baptist Church. The Rev. A.J. Wade served as the first pastor. Mr.

Services were held in a community building located in the Mallison Cord Mill village. The first Sunday was organized on February 9, 1901. October 12, 1906 the membership voted to build a meetinghouse. Joe R. Edwards, the village blacksmith, served as chairman of the building committee which erected the one-room frame building located at the intersection of the then "Gann Road" and the Athens-Watki

nsville Highway. Om April 4, 1908 the name of the church was changed to Edwards Chapel Baptist in honor of Joe Edwards who gave most generously of his time, talents and money to bring the new building to completion. For many years the church was not sufficiently strong enough to support a full-time pastor. In September 1935 the Rev. Newt Saye began serving as a Friday evening appointment with a membership of only 22. In 1942 he accepted the call as a full-time pastor and a full time church program was begun. Rev. Saye served as pastor until late 1969. During the years the membership has grew. After three additions to the frame church and realizing that further alterations were not feasible, the congregation voted in October 1952 to build the present sanctuary. Saye delivered the dedication message on June 7, 1959. The dream of a "fellowship hall" became a reality in 1964 as a building located at the rear of the church was completed. In 1986 this building was dedicated and named the" Newt Saye Fellowship Building" in honor of our late pastor. The educational annex was built in 1976. From the beginning the church has been a member of the Southern Baptist and Georgia Baptist Conventions, As well as the local Sarepta Baptist Association.

Big News & A Beautiful New Chapter!
After much prayer and a unanimous vote by our active members, Edwards Chapel Baptist Church has officially closed as a congregation—but God's work is far from over! 🙌
Our beloved Pastor Lewis answered God’s call and is now faithfully preaching and teaching in Guatemala, seeing souls saved and lives changed. His journey was just the beginning of something amazing.

At the same time, St. Thomas Church—a growing congregation of 250 + weekly—was praying for a new space to worship. God answered that prayer through us! ❤️ They will now be using our sanctuary and classrooms to continue spreading the love of Jesus Christ. Their services will start here this Summer.
But the story doesn’t end there...
We are thrilled to introduce our new mission outreach: City on the Hill Missions 🌟 — where we’ll continue serving our community through ministries like our Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, and more!
St. Thomas has warmly welcomed all former members and our community to join them in worship. God is still using this building, this land, and each one of us for His glory.
Let’s keep shining His light—together.

A note from St Thomas::::;;

St. Thomas Anglican Church has always been a church on the move! Throughout the years, we have gathered in a variety of places including homes, churches, and chapels. St. James Methodist, Redeemer Presbyterian, and Campus View Church of Christ have all opened their doors to us at different times. We have regularly used the Portico Study Center in Good Hope for occasional services and large fellowship events.
Our primary venue for Sunday morning services was the beautiful Day Chapel in the State Botanical Garden. We used the Day Chapel for years until we outgrew it. In 2024 we transitioned to the Foundry Building behind the Classic Center. We dubbed this our “minivan phase” since it was less attractive, but had lots more seating and could get us where we needed to go!
During our short history, a large part of our time and energy have been spent on the detailed planning and ex*****on of weekly set up, break down, and volunteer management that is essential for being a mobile church. We have never had a place we could truly call home. Nonetheless, the Lord has seen fit to grow our congregation and we have seen many people come to faith through what God has done at St. Thomas.
We are so excited and grateful for this next phase of ministry and can’t wait to finally have a place to call home!

St. Thomas Anglican is a young Anglican church in the Athens, GA area under the leadership of Fr. Daniel Adkinson.

Does anyone know how we can get the word out that we are opening up our church and parking lot for hurricane evacuees?
