First founded in 1830, we are a warm and welcoming congregation made up of carpenters, nurses, professors, students, secretaries, teachers, social workers, fire fighters, domestic engineers; old, young and young at heart. It became Canaanville Chapel in 1850 and then Canaanville Methodist Episcopal Church when it moved to its present location in 1899. In 1939 it became Canaanville Methodist Church
and in 1968, the Canaanville United Methodist Church; Services are Sunday at 9 a.m. Service at Stewart is at 10 a.m. We are a praying church with powerful prayer warriors. We have a prayer alert system that notifies our prayer team of prayer concerns. If you have a prayer concern, please let us know by phone or email or by the Facebook chat during the service. We are a Spirit Filled church that believes in the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We are friendly and outgoing and always welcome guests and new members. We follow a Safe Sanctuary policy to make sure children are safe at all times. Our building is handicapped accessible and so is our restroom. We are a warm and welcoming congregation working hard to follow the Greatest Commandment given by Jesus Christ, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27
Canaanville United Methodist Church is a small country church doing great things! Generally, about 35-45 people attend church in person each Sunday, with others choosing to participate online.. Our congregation is somewhat diverse. We have carpenters, nurses, professors, students, secretaries, teachers, social workers, fire fighters, domestic engineers, old, young and young at heart. Many of us consider our careers to be our personal mission work, so really our church is in ministry 7 days a week. and the pastor usually leaves to serve at Stewart UMC at 10:00 when Adult Sunday School begins. Following our children’s moment during worship, children up through the 9th grade, are able to attend Children’s Church. We have a teen youth group that meets on Sunday afternoons. We Live-Stream our services on Facebook at 9 a.m. on Sundays or later if you want to watch the recorded service. We invite people to use masks if they want to and to use social distancing. Most of the elderly and many others are vaccinated, but we have children who are too young to be vaccinated. As we approach Flu, RSV, and Covid season, please be diligent about washing hands, using hand sanitizer, etc. We do have a new air conditioning system that continually brings in filtered, fresh air. If you are just visiting the Athens area, stop in on Sunday morning or join us online; we welcome visitors to become part of our church family.
