Seen Before We Asked
I have read John 6 many times, but I made a new observation this morning while reading the passage. I observed that Jesus, in this text, met a need the people had not even expressed.
The multitude did not come to Jesus with a request for food, even though they had been with Him for some time and would soon become hungry and faint. They did not even seem to know how great their need would soon become. But Jesus saw it, and He made provision for their feeding.
“When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
— John 6:5, KJV
The Lord had already observed the need before the people expressed it. Jesus was right on time before their hunger became a crisis. Before the multitude knew what to ask, Jesus already knew what He would do about a need they had not revealed.
This reminds me of how God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone before Adam himself ever seemed aware of his need for an help meet. God saw the need before the man expressed it.
This should be a comforting thought to every child of God: the Lord does not only respond to prayers that are spoken; He also sees conditions that are unspoken, and even those yet unknown to us. He knows the need beneath our silence, the burden behind our face, the weaknesses we may not yet have admitted, and the lack we may not know how to explain.
The people were hungry, but Jesus was not indifferent. They had a need no one had voiced, but the Savior saw it.
I also observed a searching thought in the text. After Jesus met their unexpressed need by miracle, many of the people whose needs were met later sought to follow Him, not because of Himself, but because they had eaten and were filled. The mercy that should have pointed them to Christ became, for many of them, the very thing they became fixed upon.
Jesus saw and met their hunger before they requested it. But after receiving the bread, their hearts became attached to the provision more than to the Provider.
Jesus told them:
“Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”
— John 6:26, KJV
We may also ask ourselves: How many mercies has the Lord given us before we even knew to ask? How many dangers has He prevented before we knew they were near? How many needs has He supplied before they became visible to others? How many times has He fed, kept, helped, protected, strengthened, or directed us before we could even frame the prayer?
May we understand that His purpose in His provisions is not merely that we should enjoy the bread, but that our hearts should yearn for the Giver of all good gifts. God desires that we should behold the Giver from whom all blessings flow.
Every unrequested mercy should deepen our love. Every unnoticed provision should awaken gratitude. Every hidden help should draw us closer to the Source.
Can we also say that Jesus sees us before we ask? He feeds us before we demand. Many times, He supplies before we even understand our own needs.
But after being filled, may we follow the Bread-Giver more than the bread. May we purpose not to let His provisions become distractions from His person. Rather, may our daily bread lead us to the Bread of Life.
