The first service at Boyd Memorial First Church of God was March 5, 1955. Much earlier, a group of Christian people met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Boyd where large numbers attended, some out-of-town. They later met in the Old North Liberty Church for services, then in the summer of 1954 they along with Rev. Tom Stewart and Rev. Norvell Peek, began to plan for a new church.
Rev. Stewart and Rev. Peek conducted a tent revival on Mrs. Maude Boy's property near the site of where the church now stands. Mrs. Maude Boyd gave the land, along with the first $100.00, for the building of the church.
The families hauled blocked and materials from the Old Antioch Church in Athens to the present site, working hard with the LORD's guidance to build the church. Rev. Tom Stewart was the Pastor until 1969 and many souls were saved.
The Church has made many additions to the building, including a fellowship hall behind the Church under the guidance of Rev. Raymond Clore.
Other Pastors include:
Rev. David Watson, Rev. Leonard Norris, Rev. James Croft, Jr., Rev. Luke Duncan, Rev. Ollie Lankford, Rev. Paul Derrick - Assistant Pastor, Rev. Raymond Clore, Rev. Chris Hampton, and Steven Croft - our current Pastor.
Today, souls are still being saved at the Boyd Memorial First Church of God. The Church has been blessed with good pastors and members who have continued to seek GOD's guidance, giving HIM all the praise.
Beliefs
At Boyd Memorial First Church of God - The Bible itself is our doctrinal statement, from Genesis to Revelation.
WE BELIEVE in the sufficiency of the the scriptures of the Holy Bible, particularly the King James Version. The Bible is the infallible Word of the Living God; it is His revelation of Himself to the world. We can know God through His word. It is good for exhortation, to reprove and to rebuke. All scripture is given by the inspiration of God. The scriptures are our authority for salvation and Christian living. (2 Tim 3:15-17, 2 Tim 4:2)
WE BELIEVE in one God, creator of all things, who has revealed Himself as our Father, in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is God manifested in flesh. He is both God and man. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 2:9; I Timothy 3:16.)
WE BELIEVE in sin and the condemnation of mankind and deliverance from sin through Salvation in Jesus Christ alone. Everyone has sinned and needs salvation. Salvation comes by grace through faith based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:23-25; 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9, John 14:6.)
WE BELIEVE in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The good news is that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. We must obey the gospel (II Thessalonians 1:8; I Peter 4:17) by repenting of sin (Acts 2:38, Luke 13:3) and being born again of the water and the spirit (John 3:3-5, Acts 2:38-39, 8:14-17, 19:1-6).
WE BELIEVE in Sanctification and Holiness. After we have been born again, we must continue to trust Christ and follow Him in all walks of our life in total submission to Him through Holy living. (1 Ptr 2:9, Heb 12:14).
WE BELIEVE in the literal 2nd coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to Earth to judge the nations and setup the Kingdom of God to rule as King for 1,000 years before we enter into Eternity. When Christ returns, the dead in Christ will rise first and them that remain will be changed - This is the first resurrection to life and immortality. The second resurrection after the 1,000 years will be unto condemnation and death in everlasting punishment in the lake of fire. (I Thes 4:16-17, 1 Cor 15:51-58, Matt 24:29-31, Rev 19-22)
WE BELIEVE in two ordinances of the Church: 1. Baptism by full immersion in water and 2. Observance of the Lord's Supper (foot washing and communion) (Mark 16:16, Mathew 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 10:47-48, 1 Cor 11:23-26, John 13:1-17)
