St. Benedict created a way of life built around a sacred rhythm: prayer, work and community.

Monastics gather each day to chant the psalms. We work with our hands and minds, remembering that all labor becomes an offering to God. We live in community, learning to seek Christ in one another.

The Rule of St. Benedict teaches us that God is found in the ordinary moments of life.

Ora et Labora means to pray and work.

On July 11, we celebrate the Feast of St. Benedict, whose Rule continues to shape our lives. By centering monastic life on the Liturgy of the Hours, he taught us to seek God through the daily chanting of the psalms.

Did you know the meaning of th medal of St. Benedict?

The symbols surrounding St. Benedict tell the story of God’s protection and the saint’s faith. A cup with a serpent recalls the poisoned drink intended to assassinate him, which shattered when he made the Sign of the Cross. A raven carrying away a loaf of bread represents another attempt on his life, when poisoned bread was sent to him and carried away before it could harm him.

The inscription around the rim reads, Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (“The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict”) and Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur (“May we at our death be fortified by his presence”).

Far more than a piece of jewelry, the medal of St. Benedict is a reminder to trust in the power of the Cross and in God’s protection in every circumstance.

A group of our Benedictine Sisters have been in Italy for a Benedictine program. They had the cance to visit Mentorella, a beautiful mountain sanctuary and one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Italy.

It was much loved by St John Paul II, who often came here to pray ( he visited seven times). Pope Benedict XVI also visited the sanctuary, and more recently Pope Leo XIV made a private pilgrimage.

Local tradition says that Benedict spent some time there in a cave. Because of that, people leave photos, prayer cards, and notes as ex votos, both in St Benedict’s cave and in the church.

Some are left to thank God for prayers answered, while others are requests for prayers for family members and friends.

Pentecost invites us to pay attention to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives

The gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord, are given for the life of the Church, and for the good of others.

The Holy Spirit continues to guide people toward their vocation.

A vocation often begins manifesting itself as a growing desire to give one's life more fully to God.

Discerning a vocation requires space. Space to pray. Space to listen. Space to notice what draws the heart closer to God.

At Pentecost, the diciples received the courage to go where they were sent. The same Holy Spirit continues to guide and call people today.

Every vocation begins with a relatioship.

Discernment is not about making a plan for life. It is about more about learning to be close to Christ, to recognize His voice, and to trust where He leads.

Friendship with Christ gives us direction, clarity, and the courage to respond generously to God’s call.
