A Remarkable Discovery Connected to the Council of Nicaea

Archaeologists in İznik, Turkey—ancient Nicaea—believe they may have uncovered the remains of the Church of St. Neophytos, the church where the First Council of Nicaea met in A.D. 325. The council brought together Christian bishops from across the Roman Empire and produced the Nicene Creed, a foundational statement of Christian faith that continues to be proclaimed by Christians around the world today.

For Christians, this is more than an archaeological discovery. It offers a remarkable physical connection to the early Church and to the generations of Christians who gathered to affirm what they believed about Jesus Christ.

Today, we remember Florence Nightingale, nurse, reformer, and faithful servant of God, whose life was a witness to Christ’s compassion and healing love.

In the Episcopal Church, Florence Nightingale is commemorated today as one of the faithful remembered in our calendar. Her feast day invites us to give thanks for her holy example and to honor the healing ministry she embodied through her tireless care for the sick, the suffering, and the forgotten. In remembering her, the Church recognizes that acts of mercy, compassion, and service are themselves a powerful witness to the Gospel.

Florence answered God’s call by caring for the sick, the suffering, and the forgotten. Her courage, wisdom, and dedication transformed nursing into a sacred ministry of service and dignity. As people of faith, we give thanks for her example of selfless love and her commitment to bringing light into places of pain and darkness.

May her witness inspire us to serve others with mercy, tenderness, and hope.

🍎 Help Christ the King Support Maplebrook Teachers! 🍎
School starts August 12, and Christ the King Episcopal Church-Atascocita is hosting a special Teacher Supply Drive for the teachers at Maplebrook Elementary School throughout the month of August.
We invite our congregation and friends to help us show our appreciation for the teachers who work so hard for our children. We are collecting the following classroom supplies:
• Tissues/Kleenex
• Hand sanitizer
• Glue sticks
• Dry-erase markers
• Small whiteboard erasers
• Ticonderoga pencils
• Clorox wipes
• Plastic folders
• Post-it Notes (all sizes)
• Paper towels
Please consider picking up one or more of these items and bringing them to Christ the King Episcopal Church-Atascocita during any of our services or dropping them off at the church at 19330 Pinehurst Trail Drive Monday through Friday between 9 am and 2 pm. Every donation, large or small, will help our Maplebrook teachers begin the new school year with supplies they need.
